cv + patch bay?

cv + patch bay?

2008-03-26 by gunnar

does anyone have experience using a standard patch bay (dbx, behringer, etc.) to route
control voltages? do you pretty much get out what you put in? or if you haven't done this,
would you expect it to work?

i want to bring my kenton midi > cv outs to a front panel, where they would be far more
useful with my dotcom.

thanks!

I used to use a behringer patch bay for a while and
mostly worked fine except that the jacks themselves
are pretty weak and get finicky with too much plugging
and pulling. I'm sure a better uality bay like the
dbx would be a better choice, but all in all they do a
fine job of freeing up space in a cabinet by not
having to use too many multiples so you can fit in
more fancy ones!

I have two 7' racks (currently) for my modular. One is on wheels and
has to be moved so that I can get into some storage cabinets behind
it. I have two Behringer Ultraptach Pro (px 2000) patch bays, one in
each rack. I use a pair of 8' snakes on the back to interconnect the
two racks. The patch bay section is set as parallel, and they are
arranged as alternating sets of 4 points, 2 points, 4 points, ... so
that they serve as multiples and simple rack interconnects (this
gives me 8 sets of 4 point mults {actually 8 points since they are
connected between racks} and 8 sets of 2 {mostly for passing between
racks only}). This lets me move the rolling rack without tearing
apart a patch I'm working on. It works great! I've had no issues
with the connectors thus far. I bought the patch bays and the snakes
used on eBay so they were inexpensive.
