MD praise; MD wishlist

2001-08-02 by Jason Vernon Starnes

Hi all,
Just wanted to weigh in on a couple MD topics now that I've had a little time to play with
my new favorite toy. I am totally amazed at the flexibility of this machine, and I'm
excited to have the chance to give input on the OS.
The sounds are phenomenal, and the sound selection system and parameter layout is really
intuitive. Being able to sequence parameters makes this machine a true instrument. Also,
I have spent entire evenings just tweaking the delay module: it sounds fantastic, and
really approaches the behavior of an analog box. So many of the outboard applications I
was planning to use the 6 outputs for seem awkward and totally unnecessary now that I have
heard the internal effects. Putting a giant booming reverb or an arhythmic delay on only
occasional notes is just too much fun. With outboard patches, this kind of thing can be
very hard to replicate, but I love that this is all saved with the kit. The MD begs you
to experiment.

I have to agree with those asking for a few global options: being able to cater a few
things to the way we each work would only add to the functionality. Having one slot where
the knob functions are reversed would be great for live use, where fine tuning might be
less needed, but big sweeps are used for drama. Same goes for the muting function,
although I have to say I like the idea of seeing which mutes/unmutes will happen when
FUNCTION is released.

How about a function, maybe accessible via a double engagement of mute, which allows one
to "solo" a given sound? Often I have so much going on, I would like a quick way to tell
what a certain sound is doing.

Also, this one is quite important to me: as many times as I study the manual, I can never
be positive if I am about to clear a pattern or track. Either way, it occurs to me that
this is an excellent opportunity to put the yes/no keys to work. The other night a stray
button press zapped a pattern I was working on: The message "pattern clear" is
informative, but much better would be "pattern clear? Y/N". Then we could have a chance
to change our minds.... Anyone else think this would be a good safety feature? It would
only really be required on the clear function. An alternative could be an undo feature.

Again, I can't say enough good things about this box. It has already changed the way I
think about rhythms. Thanks to Elektron for restoring my faith in hardware.

cheers,
Jason
