  I have it in pattern mode... Here's what I do:

  I get a kit together with the MD in Extended mode, and create a 
bunch of patterns which I then record into the MPC, one sound at a 
time (e.g. one track for bass drum, one for snare, etc).  When I'm 
done, I totally empty out the pattern (so it's basically just an 
empty pattern assigned to a kit) and then assign that pattern to a 
note in global settings.  Then I have the first note of the MPC's 
sequence trigger the appropriate pattern in the MD (by playing the 
note), and I can then manipulate the pattern in real time by turning 
on and off tracks in the MPC.  The only bitch is parameter locks, 
which are not transmitted by the MD -- I program those into the MPC 
manually.  Elektron tells me that the MD doesn't transmit them 
because they can't be sequenced.. But I find that to be totally 
untrue.
