I think gigastudio is lacking in the sound design department. I think Kontact would be a better solution unless you need authentic sounding instruments. Either way a good computer is a must. If you really want some hardware you might want to look into a kurzweil k2500 or k2600. The prices have really come down and these are very deep instruments. They would keep you busy for a long time. We all have different ways of working no one way is right or wrong. Try and find gear you are comfortable with.

If I were you I would get or build a cheap PC and run Nemesys
Gigastudio. I have 60 GB of sample libraries instantly on tap, you
can't do that with a hardware unit.
I like to step program patterns into the MD, record them in Digital
Performer, then use Gigastudio to play them back using different
sample libraries, or layer the MD with the samples. It's very cool.
