Salud!

I have the Machinedrum and Attack softsynth. I like the Attack bassdrums
more than the MD's, but overall, I turn to the MD time and time again. I
don't know if the Rack Attack has a sequencer. Both have a wiiiiiide sonic
range, and you'll love them both. If you're into electro, I suppose you
should choose the MD. If you prefer modern dance music, maybe the Attack is
preferable. Try to listen the two machines and think about the music you
want to do.

Anyway, the Rack Attack is a lot cheaper, and it sounds great. You can buy
the MD later.

But when you buy the MD, you'll get addicted to it. It's a killer. Making
original rhythms with it is natural.

K!

oooh...stay away from the yamaha a series....I have had an a4000 for
the past year and it has given me more than a few headaches...the
sound architecture is fine and all, in fact there is just one problem
with it....but the problem is so glaring that it almost kills the
creative potential of the instrument...and that problem is *drum roll*
the knobs...the knobs are just downright awful.....it seems like
there's a little telepathic demon living in each one, who knows what
you're trying to do with the knob and causes it to do the exact
opposite....I don't know what kind of crappy knob supplier yamaha is
doing business with, but it really just kills the potential of the
sampler, IMO. Trust me, it sounds like something you could adjust to
but after a year, I still curse them every time I use them, and many
bursts of inspiration have died at their stubborn hands....

ok, my rant is over.

I think gigastudio is lacking in the sound design department. I think Kontact would be a better solution unless you need authentic sounding instruments. Either way a good computer is a must. If you really want some hardware you might want to look into a kurzweil k2500 or k2600. The prices have really come down and these are very deep instruments. They would keep you busy for a long time. We all have different ways of working no one way is right or wrong. Try and find gear you are comfortable with.

If I were you I would get or build a cheap PC and run Nemesys
Gigastudio. I have 60 GB of sample libraries instantly on tap, you
can't do that with a hardware unit.

I like to step program patterns into the MD, record them in Digital
Performer, then use Gigastudio to play them back using different
sample libraries, or layer the MD with the samples. It's very cool.

Kontakt v. Giga [was: Ok... Help me...]

2002-10-21 by Eric Peterson

I set up Kontakt on my dedicated Gigastudio box last weekend to
demo it --and WOW!

The interface is stellar. Didn't even need to look at the
documentation. The process of creating instruments and multis is
incredibly fluid [the need to use a seperate and very poorly
designed app to build your instruments in Giga has always been a
strike against it]. The filters sound great, and there are more
of them. The sound editing and effects are all right in front of
you, and you build these into your instruments almost modularly.
For serious sound designers, the modulation matrix is as flexible
and simple to use as a good synth... If it holds up in some
stress tests, I'm a convert. Cross-grade here I come.

I had actually veered away from doing serious sampling work
becaues Giga was such a PITA. Kontakt is totally refreshing in
this regard. Kudos to NI.

Oh, and sequencing it with the MD is pretty cool too. ;] -E.

For a hardware sampler, the ONLY choice imo is the new akai z-series (or the mpc4k). 24/96 is sweet. nuff said.
