Ok. I know that Erase can beatmix without problem. He chose not
to. Why? This is my guess.

Playing records from several genres, for non-dancing purposes. Music
for hanging around to, the first DJ slot for the evening. More
important to create a mood than get people up and dancing. A good
selection of music is much more important than perfect technical
skills.

I've played several gigs like that, music ranging from 20'ies jazz to
the latest electronica from Warp. Get people in a good mood, get them
prepared for what is to come later on in the night.

So, what makes a good DJ? People enjoying the music she/he plays. If
the DJ is playing to make people dance, obviously dancing people is a
good sign of a good DJ. The right DJ at the right place at the right
time.

A DJ can be playing like an angel, but if the audience doesn't like
the music, is that a good DJ? To me, no. Never. Ever. If the
club/occasion demands it, the best DJ in the world can be one that
only plays the latest country'n'western hits from the radio, as long
as the audience are enjoying it.
