the MD and MnM have a tracker-like interface for their song sequencers.
you program them row-by-row; with each row being a pattern with mutes, step
starting position, length and transpose all specified (actually a row
can also be a loop or jump point to move to other rows). but when you
play them back it just steps down through the rows and you can change
the row its playing on the fly.

I believe that's somewhat similar to what you're used to. but I don't
know, I can never get a hold of the gameboy carts that allow music
creation. I've heard great things about LSDJ but making a cart is a
pain and I've heard mixed reviews of nanoloop so I've avoided that.
I hope to play with them someday, though.
