a call to all bilingual Machinedrum users!

a call to all bilingual Machinedrum users!

2004-12-14 by sidstationownsyou

Hey everyone! MD Machine Lab (the freeware Machinedrum editor I'm writing) is now ready
to be translated into non-English languages. That's were you come in! If you speak a
language other than English, I need your help to translate MD Machine Lab.

The process is really simple, and just involves editing some plain text files.

You'll find everything you need to do the translation here:

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/elektron-users/files/Machinedrum/Other/
MD_Machine_Lab/translation_files/

( Files > Machinedrum > Other > MD_Machine_Lab > translation_files )

The instructions on how to do a translation are in the file called "+README.txt".

Please let me know if you like to help out :)

Thanks!

Andrew Garber

One question, do the string files open in a Mac? Can you use text edit
or something? I can probably get the Japanese and definitely the Korean.

Edit(why is there no edit in Yahoo?): Ok I got it to open. Are there
any bilingual people here? I think most of the translations need to
be transcribed in the phonetic representations. I don't think these
words are translatable except for "yes" and "no". I assume most of
the drums except maybe some of the latin names are western origin,
mainly English. This could make it quite easy to translate much of it.

The ".string" files are just plain text files. You should be able to drag them onto Text Edit
on Mac. Any plain text editor will do. Try renaming the files so that they end with ".txt"
instead of ".string" if you're having trouble.

LOL! My friend Emily was telling me about Esperanto the other day. The languages Mac OS
X supports right now are English, Japanese, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch,
Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean,
Brazilian, and Portuguese. So, MD Machine Lab can be localized (translated) to any of
those languages. Also, there could be more languages coming in Tiger (like Russian).

Correction to my previous post:
Mac OS X DOES support Esperanto (which is weird because, from Emily's explanation, it
sounded like a joke language that fit into the same category as Klingon). There are also,
another 50 or so languages that I didn't list in my previous post which Mac OS X supports.
Just look in "International" under System Preferences, and click "Edit" to see the full list of
languages.

LOL. Kinda...
Just dont let someone who actually speaks klingon hear you call it a
joke! They might challenge you to some kinda Klingon battle for honor
or something! Some dude actually wrote a klingon dictionary, and it
is constantly being updated with new words. There are people who
seriously speak it, probably only at conventions, but still serious.
And any person who knows about Klingons knows they're serious as
hell!!

As far as Eperanto goes, its was supposed to be like this universal
global language, it had like a little of bit of a bunch of languages
in it. It just never caught on. There was some movie made where all
the actors spoke in Esperanto, I think it was called "Incubus" or
something, and William Shatner starred in it. So guess thats its link
to Klingon. Im not a trekkie, just fascinated by them, ever since
that documentary Trekkies, but i have been known to watch an episode
or 2. I dont know if Shatner is a MD user or not, but i wouldnt bet
on it. And anyways if he was, he could always just speak English.

Re: [elektron] Re: a call to all bilingual Machinedrum users!

Pat is really close in his explanation of Esperanto.

Especially about Shatner, and "Incubus", which the
Shatner parallel really doesn't help with thinking of
it and Klingon as different spheres. Esperanto was
developed to be a universal language, and the closest
it came was the UN trying to make it a universal
second language. Namely due to it's simplicity, all
the grammatical rules fit on one letter size page, or
A4, depending on your locale. Including exceptions, oh
wait, there isn't any. On computers, Esperanto is like
the Dvorak keyboard layout, about every OS supports
it, and almost no one uses it.

well, my 21 KRW.

Im not sure im following you here. But what I meant was since Andrew
was kinda associating Klingon with Esperanto, that they are different
but you could link them together with Shatner, because he was on a
show that had Actors who spoke Klingon, and he himself was in a
Esperanto movie. And that you could consider both of them legit
languages, as in fully developed and whatnot, except that very very
few speak them.
