MD program changes = kit change???

MD program changes = kit change???

2005-06-11 by roby

hello, is there a way to change kits with MIDI program changes in the
MD? so far it seems to change only patterns.

thanx in advance

Yeah, but the only way to get it to do that is downgrade your os to 1.12.

Elektron changed program change to affect pattern after that OS revision
without much discussion, and I've been hating the feature ever since.

I recently wrote them an email asking if program change = kit change could
be an option, or if there were some way to change it without downgrading.
Maybe you could write too, if you would want it to be this way. Tell em
why you want to do that. Perhaps it could be a global option, if some
people are using it effectively in pattern change mode.

Awright. Yeah, it makes more sense to have it change kits instead of
patterns since patterns can be changed with MIDI notes already in a much
more creative way.

you've stumbled on gripe numero uno.

email elektron support and ask them to accommodate this. i
do so every couple of months.

{it used to work this way in os 1.12}

[MD] Kit change methods

2005-06-11 by daniel_elektron

The program change behaviour was changed to make the Machinedrum work
seamlessly together with the Monomachine. Both sends and accepts
program change to change pattern. If you sync up A01 on the MD to A01
on the Mono you can have them syncronised by just changing on one unit.

Program change changing kit I can understand is quite handy in many
cases, but we don't like it as it is "destructive", in a way program
change normally is not. Changing the kit of a pattern makes the
pattern sound totally different, and changes to a pattern is stored
immediately.

So we will not change back to how it was before because of the reasons
above. Hopefully we can find a way to allow people to do the easy kit
change in another way though. We like to stay out of global switches
as well we can because we want all MD's to have a general MIDI interface.

We have thought of several different methods of getting the job done:

1) Program change in a specific bank changes the kit. (using the "bank
select" MIDI command)

2) A SYSEX or CTRL-change change the kit.

3) A quick method of changing kit on the Machinedrum which doesnot
involve going to the Kit>Load menu.

Could you who feel limited by the current implementation let me know
if one or several of these proposed implementations would be usable
for you?

Thanks,

Daniel Hansson, Elektron

OK, makes sense.

This would be great. I can easily set up to accomodate specifying a bank
for program change, and it keeps the association between the idea of
presets (in software) and preset kits (in MD), allowing me to save the kit
names in my sequencers. That way I don't have to remember that kit 61 is
"light noise" and kit 23 is "dist inputs" when I want to call them up
midway through a sequence. The names would just be in the program list.

> 2) A SYSEX or CTRL-change change the kit.

This would be less useful in sequencer-world, because my software does not
let me associate specific controller values with kit names, but it's still
faster than loading via front panel.

It's not such a big problem to go into the menu, for me. But because the
MD exits the kit load menu when you load a kit, you have to hit 4 widely
spaced keys if you want to load the next one. Sometimes I just want to
step through the kits and heard what is in the BD instrument slot of each
one. Changing kits up or down quickly would be handy.

Hello Daniel,

I think either solution (#1 Bank Select or #2 CTRL-change) would be
nice. I would love the ability to change out kits while patterns and
parameter locks are going.

Thanks,

I've been trying to set this up all day and came across this thread.
Either implementation is fine. For now, I call a pattern with the kit
I want and a muted single kick in it in bank H. I then send MIDI to it
from Live only. Kinda sucks to give up a bunch of banks, but I think
it 'll work until something better is added.

Love the MD - it makes my live sets sound so good!
