Help me decide!

Help me decide!

2005-07-04 by Justin Grimley

I'm just about ready to purchase a MachineDrum but the UW has got my
attention now after listening to the demos. My question is this:
will the upgrade path always be available? I'm stretching my budget
to the limits as is and was hoping I could add the UW features in the
future. For now I'll be using the MD alongside a Korg ESX. Maybe
this combo is enough??

Elektron recently said they are not sure how long they can offer
upgrades due to how labor intensive it is for their service folk.
I'd not count on it being around for long...

Not to mention it is a pain in the arse to send your
machine away and all that.

I've got an ESX and its a great machine for sampling and mangling of
samples by motion sequences. The UW however is more then that, for
instance the sound of the MD is so much detailed and dynamic then the
ESX. I'm at the point of selling my ESX because it does'n't have the
sound quality I like so much of the Elektrons.

So, if your totally pleased with your ESX, I guess the investment is a
bit high and maybe not neccesary. But be warned!!! Once you've become
used to the MD sound, your ESX may become a bit less favourable...

Ronald.

Damn ... not the answers I wanted to hear ... but probably the
answers I expected!
Thanks for the quick responses. Two more quickies:

When it comes to which machine is more fun, the MM or the MD, what
is the general concensus here? Ideally I'd like to have both so I
guess the question could be worded "which one do I get first?"

Where is the cheapest place to buy them (apart from eBay).

Thanks,
grimley

I would suggest the UW if you can swing it. you'll love it! and
it's best to just get it
now and get it over with so that you don't have to go through the
pain of being apart
from your MD for a few weeks (if they don't discontinue the upgrade,
that is).

depends which one you need more, man. if you need drums then get
the MD first.
otherwise go for the MnM. they're both a LOT of fun and are
incredibly good at
what they do. which one you get first just depends upon what you
need first.

> Where is the cheapest place to buy them (apart from eBay).

eBay. :-) no, the price should be pretty much the same regardless
of whether you
order direct or order from a retailer. you'll probably only see at
most a $50
difference between retailers. and even on eBay, you'll likely only
save yourself
$100 and you won't get the 10-day return policy or 1-year guarantee
that comes
with a new unit.

this is UW

2005-07-04 by Flo Zombie

When I received my MD-UW I didnt really expect much.
When I tried it out it immediately showed me that this is a new Diamond
in my setup.

First thoughts I had when I heard about it:
1. Sampler, nice, but do I need it?
2. Only 32 Samples thats not very much
3. Midi transfer? Oh man.
4. Will it sound good?

These are the answers:
1. I have been working mostly with samples since a few years.
The UW is really a new way of working with samples.
The samples really come to life, because it is so easy and fast to
change the parameters and it is so much fun.

2. I loaded 16 samples into the Machine, to fill one set.
I was playing around for 3 hours, I forgot to eat, drink and smoke.
And still I had the feeling I could make another 4 Songs out of these
samples. Of course it is a limitation to have only 32 Samples, but you
dont really feel it. The only thing you feel is that it is exactly this
limitation that will bring you to new results and stop you from spending
your time on bullshit.

3. Midi transfer is no problem because you can transfer all 32 Samples
at one time. It doesnt even take much time because you mostly use short
samples. To transfer 32 samples might take 5 minutes, ok.

4. I was really surprised by the sound. The samples sound more crispy
and dynamic when they come out of the MD than when you hear them on your
computer. What is that about, how did they do it?

I cant help myself, I just think its phantastic.
Roland, Yamaha, Akai and all other companies finally can close their
business now, they have fooled us for too long anyway.

best greetings
Flo

Thanks for the great mini-review. I'm really curious to hear the
crispy and dynamic sound engine myself. Great to hear also that 32
sample limitation isn't a show-stopper; rather the opposite. I'll be
getting my upgraded MD friday. Cant wait!!!

Toni.

Trade: Monomachine for MachineDrum

2005-07-05 by John Gellings

I'm thinking I may (maybe) want to trade my
Monomachine for a Machinedrum in the near future. My
Monomachine is mint and comes with all the original
documents and box. I live in Jersey City, NJ USA.

Well I can't find an original MD in stock anywhere (not even
Elektron). So I'm tempted my the UW now. $1600 at NovaMusik (hot
damn)! Anyone seen it cheaper?

I guess there is a some sort of waiting list for UW's at elektron.
You leave your mail-address and they notify you when there is more
UW's coming. I've understood that they don't actually reserve UW's
for people, but they notify them. You could sign to this list, so
that you will at least get a notice when UW's are coming.
