pattern automated midi controller data to computer sequencer

2005-07-23 by ryan

Hello,
I am currently having some problems recording patterns that I have
made on the machindrum with MIDI controller automation. Typically,
when recording in the studio I will use my computer sequencer and
live controller recording for automation of the machinedrum.

However, recently, machinedrum has become a welcome bedtime companion
and I have composed numerous loops, etc. on the drum machine itself
with numerous MIDI controller automations during the pattern (ex.
delays and sample bit reductions modulating on a snare over the
course of the pattern). My problem is that when I now attempt to
bring this information into my sequencer the pattern will record but
without the midi controller automation leaving it rather bland and
lifeless. So basically the sequencer receives all the events (like
bass drum, snare drum, etc.) but does not get the controller
information going with these events (pan changes, etc.).

However, if i press record and modulate these controllers manually,
as I traditionally have done, the controller data will be recorded.

Why can I record controller data manually, or with the sequencer but
am unable to use automated pattern programs?

How can I bring these patterns complete with controller information
into sonar as MIDI data (not only events but the controller
information that goes with these events).

Any knowledge on how to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated.

You can't. Parameter locks are only used internal and not send out
thru midi. The only way you can use these self made patterns are in
audio format. This will probably sound very restricted but give it a
try. I always record my patterns as audio tweaking some knobs, muting,
switching patterns, adding fx on the fly. After that I edit the audio,
cut out the bad pieces and add some other stuff if needed in a PC
sequencer (logic). It's a different approach to making music, but I'm
glad I did try it since it's a so much more creative way for me now.

Hey Ronald thanks or the info - i greatly appreciate it. I am
somewhat disappointed as I really wish I could just send this
controller data over for further edits, etc within songs making
slight variations and transitions much more simple. I will certainly
give the straight audio recording a go with my patterns created
soley on the machine but will likely attempt to record future
automations live via midi in the studio as that has always been my
favorite :).

Thanks again for the assistance.

Ryan

[Anthony Justman] I do the same thing as Ronald suggests. I will multitrack
the MD outputs into the computer and usually do a 2-track to a CDR or
something. Even from a 2-track, I can do some wild chopping in SoundForge
or (a similar program) and then create a new track with the PlayList
function. I'll go from a 15-20 minute free form session to a 5-7 minute
finished track.
