MachineDrum, Vermona DRM-1, Moog MicroMoog and Roland SH-101

MachineDrum, Vermona DRM-1, Moog MicroMoog and Roland SH-101

2005-08-24 by taco6

I'm an owner of an Elektron Monomachine and it is my only piece of hardware outside of
my computer that I run all the typical apps on. I'm going to buy a MachineDrum in Sept...
that'll be my second piece of hardware. Outside of those machines, which are definetely
keepers, I'm looking at the Vermona Drum Synth and either a Roland SH-101 or a
MicroMoog. I have a few questions.

I'm wondering if the Vermona will be redundant once I have the Machinedrum? and which
one oscillator synth is better overall... the SH-101 or the MicroMoog?

I like that you can use the MicroMoog's filter through the input run external equip through
it)... which I don't believe you can do with the SH-101. However, I like that the SH-101
runs on batteries, has a built in sequencer (even if primitive), and is cheaper than the
moog...and easier to find... Both sound great to me. I have always wanted both the SH
-101 and a Moog...but never bothered...but the time has come to buy one.

Any opinions are welcome... thank you.

As far as the SH-101 it's one of the coolest mono synths, limited, but you
get a nice range of sound from it that are very playable from the controls
and the best bass! the sub osc by itself is awesome. The sequencer is kind
of useless on it for me at least. Right now I just play it but I got a FR
revolution for midi>cv needs.

Here's a little something that's monomachine, SH-101 and korg EMX for drums.
The SH-101 does the bass mel in the beginning part and most everything in
the second part via recorded overdubs in logic.

I know heh, I need to finish it but my 101 is kind of out of commission
right now, it likes to crash randomly, I think the button contacts are a bit
screwed, I need to get it fixed or get a new one.

I like!! Love the warm sound!

I'm just in the process of buying a SH101 from a mate. He has 2 and i'm lending him some cash so he can bring out a record on his lable.
He still has to make up his mind, but if he sells it it goes to me.

I hope he sells it to me! but if he doesn't, I can still borrow it.

Very interrested to hear the full track!

Olaf

I'd suggest getting the Machinedrum before you decide whether or not
you need more drums. it's pretty damn versatile and personally, I
don't see
a need for much else (and I've dumped analog drum machines in favor
of it), drum-wise. but that's me. you may feel differently, but I
think you
can't really make that decision or even consider it honestly until
you have
played with a Machinedrum extensively.

Ah yes the Vermona I think I remember that one up for discussion a lot in
Analog Heaven, a lot of people didn't like the sound, said it lacked punch,
and needed external processing, but again that is just what I heard.

I think if you get an MD you will be way busy with that for a while in drum
land. Your better off with another one of those analog synths, the mono is
pretty digital sounding all around, so some analog warmth will do you
nicely. Plus you can prob get both the 101 and micro for the price of that
Vermona :)

I myself is jonesin' for a voyager :D

In response to below:

I wish...the Vermone is $670 new. I just listened to
it again and it sounds a bit like a Korg
Electribe...which I hate. It sounded better the other
day after I smoked some crack.

Maybe I'll forget the Vermona and get a SH-101 and
TR-606 to mess with old school style... since the
Monomachine and MD will be fine.

606? I'm tellin' ya, man...yr not gonna need that :-)

you'd be better off getting the UW and picking up some 606
samples online; it'll do more with that sound than the 606
can (since all you can change in the 606 is volume). true,
this option would be more $, but your options would open up
*dramatically*

haha! the 606 is heaps cool.. its got a nice little sequencer which
can switch between write and play while playing, its very easy to
mod it with individual outputs and extended ranges too. analogue
drums are nothing to sneeze at! no sample will replicate it. the
best part is, any drummachine with a sequencer is great to run
through the inputs on the MD.. parameter locks per step mean the
sound can be changed to your liking, not just volume. as you might
tell, i use mine every day :)

oh yeah.. get the UW ;)

Yeah, I understand the TR-606 is redundant...but I
love it. I have owned a few before and miss it.
Plus, you can use TR-606 samples, but you can never
make it sound like it was programmed on a real
TR-606...something about the way that sequencer plays
the notes... very cool. Call it a nostalgic buy.
