Empty Magic (software utility for the Machinedrum)

2005-12-08 by Michael Alyn Miller

Hi folks,

My new software utility for the Machinedrum is finally ready for public consumption! The
program, Empty Magic, is designed to complement the Machinedrum by adding a number
of performance-oriented features to the MD.

You can mute tracks and groups of tracks with MIDI notes, play the machines from your
MIDI keyboard and even change multiple Machinedrum settings from a single MIDI control
wheel. Velocity-based adjustment of parameters is in there as well.

I started out building this thing for myself, but then I saw other Elektron users on the web
asking for the same features that I was interested in. So I dug back in and turned it
into a real software product. I am interested to find out what everyone thinks of the
software, and what other features you would like to see!

Empty Magic is available for Mac OS X and Windows. You can get the evaluation version
from my web site: http://www.strangeGizmo.com/

If there is enough interest in Empty Magic, then I have a number of other ideas for
Elektron-related software products that I would like to work on. Graphical editor/librarian,
anyone?

Thanks for your time, and please let me know what you think of the software!

BTW, Empty Magic 1.0.0 (the version on the web site) is designed for use with a hardware
MIDI controller. Contact me via e-mail if you would like a prerelease version of 1.1.0,
which can be controlled by a MIDI sequencer.

This looks pretty slick.
One question - excuse me if it is obvious, but does the "Magic Touch"
velocity sensitivity thing also work for pads such as the ones on a
Trigger Finger or MPD ?
I am assuming it will work with the pads in velocity mode.. but the
pads are also pressure sensitive and can lead to some very interesting
results when used in such a way.. If this is not a feature do you
think you can add it? (Feature creep already! haha)
Please? :)

Great work tho, can't wait to try it when I get home.

Actually - the pressure thing is just a natural function of the
controller itself.. but it essentially just spits the CC's out
according to the pressure.. does the velocity engine work only for
note-based triggering or does it respond to CC as well?

You bet! Magic Touch will respond to anything that sends Note On
messages. This includes the Trigger Finger, MPD16, etc.

There is a CC-based companion to Magic Touch called Magic Wheels.
The two processors are almost identical, but Magic Touch responds to
Note On velocity (the initial velocity at which you hit the key/pad)
and Magic Wheels responds to a MIDI continuous controller.

You could easily create a Magic Touch configuration to respond to the
velocity at which you hit the pad and a Magic Wheels configuration to
respond to the CC-based pressure data that is sent by the pad after
you have hit it.

Let me know if you would like more information about this setup.

Thanks! Feel free to send along any other comments, suggestions, etc.

does the MD respond to aftertouch, or are you asking for
translation within the app?

Thanks it all makes sense now. I foresee my trigger finger becoming
the ultimate companion to my md...
Only 2.5 more hours of work to go .. .dammit!
Nice work again.
