SidStation

SidStation

1999-12-14 by BoB Green

Hi, I'm new to the list. My main question is for all
the SidStation owners out there. I want to know if u
r satisfied with the SidStation. Tell me what u
like/don't like about it. I produce stuff that sounds
like Trance, hard techno, and hard house. I was just
wondering if I should get it or keep saving and get a
TB303. I would like to have a synth with a built in
sequencer, that's the main draw back so far on the
SidStation. Of course then I would always have to
save for the devilfish mod (on the 303). Hard
decisions

Thanks 4 any help,
Jesse

i would have to say that i'd get bored pretty quickly with a TB303.
its synthesis capabilitys are very limited compared to a SidStation.
not to mention they are very old and expensive even if they are barely
working.

Hi,

Buy it, your life will never be the same! You'll start wondering how you've
managed to live through all these years without it... ;)

> Tell me what u

Like: everything: it's about the only synth out there with distinctive
character.

Depends on what you want: you want to make the same stuff everyopne has been
making for the last ten years? Well, get yourself a TB then... you want to
try out new things and set new standards for the future? Then the SidStation
is not just an option, it's a must.

After buying youre Sidstation, you should start saving for a computer with
sequencer... much more efficient than a synth with sequencer. Except if you
need it onstage of course...

Re: SidStation

1999-12-14 by BoB Green

ight, I got some more questions. I don't really
understand the synthesis of the sidstation (being that
I was only a rug rat when the c64 came out), is it
analogue? Also, I might be old fashioned but I still
think a 303 is a very useful tool, I still love the
deep lows and screaming highs one can make, and I
really don't give a shiznit who knows I'm tweaking
with a devilfish mod-if I was into glamour I would
have joined N-SYNC.
Anybody got any mp3s or any other music out
there using the sidStation? The demos on the site
sound fairly cheap and commercial to me (there were a
couple of good ones don't get pissed, it's only my
opinion).
A sequencer isn't the biggest problem, obviously I
have a computer, and for live sets I would probably
just use my mc303 for sequencing (about all it's good
4). Anybody know the site(s) where I can find info on
the nord?
Thanks 4 all your help,
Jesse

It's a mix between analogue and digital. It's subtractive as an analogue,
with an analogue NMOS-filter, but with digital oscillators (built up by
counters).

This is not important though. The important thing is how it sounds.

Could you let me know which ones you like / do not like? This way we know
better what kind of demos people like.

Digital waveforms with analogue filter.

I agree! Nice machine, but overused lately... just like many others, TR909,
TR808, JV 1080 etc etc... They're all good machines, but overused.

I'll soon make a SidStation song: only SidStation! Nothing else but
SidStation... except reverb and other effects. I plan to make it somewhere
the last week of Januari or so...

Why not?
I've been able to make some pretty nice sounding drums with the help of
Daniel. You can do it with the tables. It's sometimes a lot of work, but the
result is nice and sounds very original. Hihats, bassdrums, snaredrums,
toms, you name it and it can be done...

Programming the tables is something you have to get used to. I think I only
just know the basics of it right now... Making a drum sound: instead of
using the table as sequencer, speed it up so that the sequence forms one
sound...

yes it's like an analogue step sequencer thing .. but you sort of feed it
wave-sequences that play back one after the other. At a slow speed it's a
basic sequencer (weird!) .. at high speed its one crazy sound.

Hmm reminds me of tracker chip music techniques of using single looped
waveform samples as the basis for chip instruments (the fast loop creates
frequency).

that sounds like it would be pretty killer to funk

Well, sometimes you need some imagination to hear drums in the patches I
made... so maybe there's still some creativity left over here. ;)

(some drums are very nice though)

It's especially the "Wave"-Table-Functions of Soundroutines that I always liked the most
on C64-Soundroutines ... It's offers flexibility far better than most "fixed routing layout"-Synths.
If you think "hmmm... this sound needs a little <tschipptzuuu> in front..." you can simply add
such Waveform/Pitch-Switches at the start of it. This was extensively used on 64 for
Percussive Sounds and FX-Sound or just to simulte a "closed Hihat" whenever a smooth
Bassline played a note (to not waste a Voice on it and to make the Bass more spotable)

Are these wavetables editable from the front panel of the sidstation? I've
never discovered them.

Hi,

No, actually you have to screw the thing open and then you can see the tables...
now start moving them around in the case but watch out not to touch the
oscillators or they'll be detuned..... :)))

Yes they're editable from the front panel. There ws some paperwork included with
the SidStation... some people like to name it "manual". Sometimes you can find
info about the machine's features in it. ;))) And sometimes, there's even a
small tutorial on sound programming in it (like the one provided with the
SidStation: VERY nice manual)

Ciao,
Joeri

Or does anyone know a place to get one...
