Machinedrum bottom end lacking...

Machinedrum bottom end lacking...

2006-05-09 by rydan

Hello there!

I have been experimenting quite a bit with my UW, and I really love it,
especially for creating weird percussive loops and strange sampling effects
using the ram machines. However, I feel the kick drums are a bit lacking. I
can't really put my finger on it, but they sound a bit thin I think. They
may be loud and cutting through, but it seems hard to get that extra, deep,
round oomph out of them.

So, well, my other favourite for drum sounds is Attack, s\ufffd I created a
really mean-sounding trance style kick, added some unmild compression (UAD-1
rocks!), and exported to a wav file. Transfered it to the machinedrum and
Tada!, eeeh oh, no, wait, the ooomph was gone again...

Is it just me, or is anybody else experiencing this?

/Patrik

It's 100% entirely you. The MD thumps somethign fierce IMO, try
playing with the EQ and hi pass filter with heavy amounts of res.

Different strokes for different folks i suppose,
or in this case dif thumps for different bumps?

It all depends on what type of kick i am trying to create.....
I find creating an 808 sounding kick on the MD too be very deep and thumpy, where as other times I have a problem creating just the right oomph, either way, I cant make a blanket statement either way whether the MD has a fierce enuff kick or not. It is obviously a very flexible drum machine/sampler and I believe it is the composer which must tailor it to his or her needs as they see fit...

man i dodged that question... hopefully...
I am curious what others think as well...

Also,
it might not be your MD at all:
adding pads with 'thin' kicks, using a decent compressor, in the right
mix, might pump the beat a bit :)
If that aint working, try to combine different kicks..with compressor..

Re: Machinedrum bottom end lacking...

2006-05-10 by tahvenaine2002

From my experience, getting deeph oomphs is a matter of mixing sounds
together. It's easy to alone, but when you start to add different
sounds to it, overall impression loses it. The trick is to make stuff
dynamic, it got me year to understand this. So try to start with huge
headroom and then work your way through. If you want huge oommphh, you
cannot have huge everything else. It is the little sounds that make
another sounds big.

Toni.

2006-05-10 by Patrik Rydberg

Yes, well, what's annoying me isn't that my bass drum sounds bad in a
mix. What's annoying me is that the same sample of a kick, played
straight from cubase (with no effects of course) sounds different than
if i send it to the machinedrum using the C6 utility, and then play it
from there.

Feel free to compare the two:

www.cutpaste.org/temp/mdtest/Sample.wav
www.cutpaste.org/temp/mdtest/MD.wav

(also, if opened in a wave editor, you can clearly see the difference)

This is a bit strange, I think...

Re: [elektron] Re: Machinedrum bottom end lacking...

That's not strange at all, the machinedrum samples are converted to
12-bits and gritty-sounding on purpose. That's the whole point. If you
want them hi-fi, keep them in Cubase.

They are also mono, where as the sample in Cubase might be stereo.

Re: [elektron] Re: Machinedrum bottom end lacking...

2006-05-10 by Patrik Rydberg

Well, yes, I konw they are 12bit, but that should just alter the
amplitude of the samples, not the symmetry of the rise/fall of the
waveform. A sine wave should still be a sine wave, although with a bit
worse amplitude resolution I think...

I might as well mention that the reason not to keep them in cubase is
live use...

It's not really a big problem, I just find it a bit strange...

Well, the original sample is mono as well.
