SIDed - The SIDStation Editor

SIDed - The SIDStation Editor

2001-11-14 by Paul J. Furio

Okay, I'm really working on this now. I finally have a little time
to putz with it, so hopefully we'll see something soon.

The bad news is, it doesn't look like the MIDI Sysex Implementation
Spec allows you to change the Tables (if you use them in a sound)
without sending a patch update to the SIDStation, which of course
overwrites the existing patch...

Anyway, these are the things I plan on implementing:

Full SYSEX Dump/Receive Caps with Save/Load ability
Realtime Update/Send for all controlable Knobs & Params
SIDStation-like GUI (yellow tipped knobs with actual value overlay
text)
Mouse/Keyboard controlable keys (play the SID from the PC)
Table Editor

Is there anything else people would like to see? It's going to run
on the Windows9x/2000/Me/XP Platforms (although I'll need help
testing on everything but Win98 since that's what I use). Sorry Mac
users! :(

Consider a modular coding technique and open source
software, so *you don't have to convert it to Mac/GNU/Linux*.
Someone else can if they get the notion to.

How about a way to trigger the Sidstation from the GUI. Like a mini
onscreen keyboard or simple sequencer. Or better yet, the ablilty to
use the mouse like a theremin on an X Y axsis!

Yeah, I plan on putting a "virtual keyboard" as part of the GUI. The
Theremin idea is neat. We'll see how much time I have. I'd rather
include that in a later version and get a working "Bare-bones" editor
out to people first though.

Other notes: Yes it will be Open Source, although because it's going
to be a Win32 app, it will use the winmm MIDI functions and MFC, so
whoever ports it will have to redo the interface and MIDI
functionality. There will be knobs for parameters we'd all like to
tweak, like resonance. I'd like to shove as many knobs as possible
on screen, actually. I plan on having the actual values of the knobs
display in the window toolbar, as well as having an optional
onmouseover info popup. I probably will not do any digitization or
speech synthesis attempts or even research in the near future. I'll
have to look at the ASID interface, as that may be a better way of
directly controlling the chip for speech stuff, but that's a ways off.

With luck, I'll have the raw MIDI interface stuff done by next week,
and the GUI should be the next hardest part. Everything else is just
going to be data pushing and debugging. :)

Thanks for the feedback and interest.

Anyone know if something came of this?

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
