Pattern Chaining and MidiMachines

Pattern Chaining and MidiMachines

2001-12-30 by superfearo

Forgive me, I do not yet have my Machinedrum. It's currently in
Paris.. so hopefully I'll get it within the next two days.

But this new pattern chaining I hear about in the new OS. What
exactly is it? Wasn't it available in previous OS versions? It it the
same thing as pattern sequencing on the fly?

And midimachines.. now that everyone has had a few days to
play around with it.. how are they? Any limitations? Or is it really
that great and enables full control of external synths? I heard
someone mention something about having the ability to do
chords.. can someone explain how it is set up and works?

One last general question.. what is the maximum polyphony of
the machinedrum?

Thanks!

And to add an explanation to my confusion on pattern chaining..
I read this excerpt from the manual..

"If pattern selection is done while the sequencer is playing, the
selected pattern
will not be active until the current pattern has played to its end.
You will
see the change in the display as described in section "THE LCD
USER
INTERFACE", on page 9."

Isn't that pattern chaining?

Haven't downloaded the new OS yet, but I think by pattern chaining
they mean that you select more than one pattern, eg. B01-B04, and the
MD will play these 4 patterns sequentially, in a loop.

Nils

That was what I had hoped for. I've tested this a bit, but it doesn't
work the way I am used to from the TR-606. If you try to chain
patterns 1-4 together (from any bank), then it will play pattern 1 and
patern four, but not the patterns inbetween!

I love the new midimachines! :)

Further investigations reveal that you have to press the button for
each pattern that is to be chained, it does not automatically select
the range between the button that you've pressed.

Example:

Pressing buttons 1 and 4 plays patterns 1 and 4 chained together.
Pressing buttons 1,2,3 and 4 plays the patterns 1 to 4 chained together.

This way of selecting which patterns to be chained together is more
flexible, but confusing to one like me who is used to the old style
Roland drummachines.
