So I guess it's worth the upgrade?

So I guess it's worth the upgrade?

2002-01-01 by superfearo

I just got my machindrum. It's so lovely. Is the upgrade to the
beta worth it? Or is it full of bugs?

Also, I'd love to sync my machinedrum to my virus and later use the
midimachines. But currently, when I have my midi out of my
machinedrum to the midi in of my virus, and i try to sync them, the
md sends out the clock data.. but for some reason, when i press the
drum trigger keys on the md, it also triggers notes on my virus. How
do I prevent this? And why is this happening? This is preventing me
from syncing the two machines together, because I cant stop the note
triggers.

If there are bugs, they are in the new functionality. Bugs have been
fixed for the old stuff. I'm using 1.09b right now, and it works fine.

The default for the machinedrum is to use midi channel 1-4 for it's
own drums, control changes and such. Set the Virus to recieve MIDI
data on other channels than those. Then use the midimachine which
outputs notes to that channel.

The other solution is to change the default channels for the MD. Just
make sure that there are no overlaps between the channels used by the
MD and the other synths you use.

/Janne, controlling the Juno-2 and JX-8P from my MD :)

First off, Janne, thanks for the prompt reply. Okay, I fiddled
around with the Virus. In PATCH mode (only one channel active),
changing the channel which to receive MIDI data on to 2 stopped all
unwanted triggering from the MD. Now, what happens in PERFORMANCE
mode, where I have all 16 multitimberal parts open? Will I again
have problems with unwanted note trigger? I'm in bed right now, so
I'll test it in a few.

I used to consider myself very good with MIDI, but I'm honestly
confused here. Maybe I'm used to my MPC.. it had a drum setting for
internal sounds and a midi setting for external gear.

I understand that, what, the MD has 4 midi channels for its own drums
and etc.. But shouldnt that only matter up receiving midi to the
MD? Why does it matter when sending out data?

Okay, you said maybe to change the default channels for the MD.. what
does that mean as far as how things will be triggered? And
overlaps.. what do you mean by overlap? What are the consequences of
overlap?

 Thanks.

The parts on the Virus that are assigned to the same midichannels used
by the MD will behave strangely.

I think it sends out the data to be used for recording stuff in
external sequencers. That way you can program beats on th MD, record
them in your favourite sequencer package, play it back without using
the MD:s internal sequencer.

Have a look at the manual, I thin it mentions a few things when it
comes to midi and channels.

Hmm overlap. Call it midi clash instead.
MD uses channel 1-4.
Virus on 1-16.
Channels 1-4 are used by both machines..

To get around this, have the machines on separate midi chains, or just
don't use the channels on the Virus that is used by the MD.

Okay.. I guess what I'll do is set the MD midi base channel to 13-16,
since I rarely get up that high when using my other multitimberal
gear.

ULITMATELY, this is what I would like. To sync up the machinedrum
with my Akai MPC 2000xl (which I can already do successfully) but
STILL make use of the midimachines so I can sequence the Virus using
the MD step sequencer. Any ideas?

I would try MIDI Out of the MPC to MIDI In of the MD. Set the MD to receive
external clock. Then MIDI Out of the MD to MIDI In of the Virus with the
Virus also set to receive external clock.

As you noted, give the MD and the Virus their own designated MIDI channels.
I think, with the MIDIMachines, you can sequence up to 16 external channels.
Depending on how many channels you want to use on the Virus, you might want
to say 1-8 are for Virus only and channels 9-16 are for the MD only.

Now...if only I HAD a Machinedrum!
