Okay.. I guess what I'll do is set the MD midi base channel to 13-16, 
since I rarely get up that high when using my other multitimberal 
gear.

ULITMATELY, this is what I would like.  To sync up the machinedrum 
with my Akai MPC 2000xl (which I can already do successfully) but 
STILL make use of the midimachines so I can sequence the Virus using 
the MD step sequencer.  Any ideas?
