Try an adaptor bought in Mexico (so the power translation is just right) .
Its worth a shot.

Hey, boys and girls(?) !!!

I have a big ass problem.
I?m playing in Mexico City (Love Parade) on Saturday and I checked
my equipment after arriving here from munich/germany.

The test result: Machinedrum won?t switch on.
I did the "tongue test" with the adaptor, there?s something coming out.

The machinedrum was in the handluggage while I was flying,
so I really don?t understand why it doesn?t turn on....

So, this goes out to elektron, too:
If you have any idea if this could be a fuse or whatever
let me know. I?ll find an electrician or try it myself or whatever.

This is very important to me because I don?t have
the chance every week to play the MD in front of 70.000 mexicans.

Best greetings
Flo

Well, I have a power converter 110v to 220 V with me, so that should be ok.
I did that several times before.

I think I should try measuring the power output of the adaptor.
Uh, it?s not so easy to find stuff in MEX.

or try a couple of different adaptors.
or make sure you have a power converter to step up or down to the right
voltage, not just a different shaped plug.

hey,
this is the 3rd time:
I have an extra, 7 kilo heavy power transformer
that makes the local 110 volts to good ol europe styleee 220v.

It does its job very well for 1 year now.
So, where I plug in is ~220v.
This adaptor drives all my euro-gear, and it feeded the MD very well
in dozens concerts in the past.

Thats not the problem.....

Dont you guys know the voltage from power outlets is different from Europe?
Jason is right - you need a new AC adapter. Those of you with computers
will notice the tiny red switch on the back of the power supply that changes
the voltage - unfortunately AC adapters usually dont have this feature. See
if Elektron can mail you an American power supply (110 volt). Im not
positive, but I think Mexico has the same power outlet voltage.

Re: [elektron] MD emergency MEX !!!

2002-04-13 by charlie_palmieri

Do other things power up OK from your transformer?

If so, then there is a problem inside the MD or with the power
adaptor.

I think that, unless the MD was in a really well made flight case,
the journey in the cargo hold will have been quite stressfull for it.

You _may_ need to open up the MD and check that all the chips are in
their sockets ok, wires in the right place etc.

In Mexico city, there are whole streets in the center that have just
1 type of shop on them. There is one street with music shops
(everything from records to PA stuff to a few keyboards). You may
either want to

[1] get the screwdriver that opens the MD from one of the
more 'electrical' type shops, open it up yourseld, and check. You may
want to buy a multimeter as well.

[2] ASK if anyone can have a look inside for you. This is kind of
risky, as the MD is rare and new, and I would guess very specialised.

The music street is quite close to the Zocalo, the street is called
Bolivar. To get there, go to the Centro Historico, and locate the
Palacio De Bellas Artes in the Alameda Central. Take the street
called '5 De Mayo' that comes off the east side of the park. I think
it is the 3rd street on your right. You will have to walk down about
4 to 6 blocks to get into the music shops. There is also more
electronic shops around this area, maybe in the street called 'Rep
Del Salvador'

I hope you get it fixed in time.

Re: [elektron] MD emergency MEX !!!

To be clear, Bolivar is the 3rd street on your right as you walk East
along 5 De Mayo.

RE: [elektron] MD MEX FIXED!

2002-04-15 by Zombie Nation

Hey,

I spent the whole friday in trying to fix the MD and it ...worked!

The power converter was not the problem,
it was the machine. A very friendly guy from a local "midi school" brought
me and the MD to a repairshop. The "shop" looked more like a mix
between a broken gear collector and a car repair.
But they know how to fix things here in Mexico.

So, the part that was broken was some controller of the power unit.
It looks like a transistor (with metal cooling unit).
The construction seemed a bit not so well (sorry elektron).
Basically that cooler is swinging free to the side, its just
attached with some silicone glue. The glue was loose (also the
one on the 2nd cooler), so the thing was swinging in the air,
and one of the 3 contacts was broken because of all that swinging.
There was also the problem that the cooler could have touched the
chassis, which would have been not so good.

But good luck, he fixed it and the machine is running,
So I could play! The concert was amazing!

Yee, another interesting thing:
They hand-manufacture knobs there.
So, if anyone has an old synth where 1 knob is missing....

Thanks
Splank

Awsome!!! I was thinking about you yesterday,
wondering how you did. Glad to know it all worked out
perfect. How was your set? Did they dig it?
I'm actually NOT taking my machinedrum (I freaked out
wit your story and just loaded everything into my
sampler so I could leave the MD home. I am taking,
though, my quasimidi Polymorph, but that sucker is
built like a tank, and I have it in a camera suitcase)

PD
Did you see a flyer for "Circo Electronik"?
