First 100 machinedrums ever produced...tighter knob action. Is This Bad?

2002-05-06 by alpha_peak

I am asking cus I am about to buy one , but the seller warned me
before I buy it that this is #45 out of the first 100 that were
produced. And the first 100 have tighter knob action than the
newer ones. Anyone have any feedback on this? Should I hold
out for a newer one? Thanks!

I have one of those machines, and the tightness doesn't bother me at
all. The only problem I have had with the knobs were when I was
sitting in the sofa, programming patterns. Having the MD in my lap,
the tightness combined with the slightly slippery plastic knobs became
a bit irritating. Otherwise, not a problem.

The tightness sucks,
but its no problem because Electron promised a lifetime
knob-exchange-service
for #1-100.

Have you done that? You liked the newer knobs better?

I tested the new knobs, but I became worried that
I might change seomthing by mistake, they were to slack for my
taste. Something in between would have been good for me.

Well, I tested a newer MD at a friends house,
it felt much smoother.
It feels like fun turning them, while now
it feels like hard work.

I didnt use the service yet, because I need my MD all time
and I dont want to miss it for 2 weeks.
I guess they do it very fast.

Yes.

Imo, yes.
They are easier to turn, and when you have sweaty hands (like I do),
then it it more fun to program.

LOL :-)

The knobs' feel is OK, but the knobs are too close to eachother. The
rule of thumb: you have to be able to at least one finger between the
knobs. In the MD, that's impossible. They're just a bit too close
unfortunately.

Hi Joeri :)

JV> The knobs' feel is OK, but the knobs are too close to eachother.

I agree. My fingers are usually not able to twist they knobs without
inadvertently changing values on other knobs...

I also think the method used for Fine vs. Coarse value adjustment
should be reversed. When twisting in real time I usually want larger
steps... pressing the knob while turning should be used for fine
adjustment instead.

Yes, that's a great Idea. It would be very good if you could switch
it back and forth from the global menu, as one method is good
for editing, and one is good for live performance. Another thing
which would help a great deal in live situtations is moving the
mute submenu just a little up and to the right, so it doesn't
completly obscure the pattern number display... Has anyone
else noticed that? Also, the ability to "latch" pattern bank
selection keys would be very helpful, so as not to have to press
two buttons to change patterns.
OK, now that I'm on a roll......... One thing I've always wanted to
see on the MD is some king of flam/note repeat feature which
could be adjusted to different beat subdivisions per step, per
instrument....It could be a parameter lock function. It would also
be really great to be able to mult LFOs to different parameters.
Well, thats all..... I've had my MD for about a month now, and am
very, very happy with it.....Those are my only suggestions (aside
from perhaps a CHER or Michael Jackson screen)..
Cheers all, Jeremy
