Weird oscillator sync feature

Weird oscillator sync feature

2000-02-21 by Gisle Martens Meyer

Hello,

I am trying to create a sync-sound. But there is a peculiar thing about
it:
-Oscillator 1 and 3 is off.
-Oscillator 2 is on, and LFO 1 is pitch modulating it with a slow ramp.
-When Sync is turned off, this results (ofcourse) in a slow pitch raise.
-When I turn on Sync for Osc 2, so it is synced to osc1, the classic
sync sound appears.

However, no matter what note I press, the same pitch is output!

Then I turn ON Osc 1, and I can now play the synced sound up and down
the keyboard. It gives me almost the same sounding result, except I can
hear Osc 1 aswell on top of the sync Sound . Should it really be like
this? I would really like to hear only the synced waveform by itself.

I suppose I can set Osc 1 attack/decay time to 0 and sustain level to 0
so it will be silent. But then there is nothing (only silence) to sync
with?

I thought that when turning off Osc 1, you are only turning off the
OUTPUT of this oscillator.
It is still available for syncing and ringmodulating.

I am not a synth programming wizard (yet). What am I doing wrong / have
I misunderstood?

Thanks for any insight,
Gisle

In v1.0 only oscillators that are active are updated. So you need to
activate it for it to have any effect. You don't want it to sound? Well,
set the waveform to none!

In the 1.1 update all oscillators are always updated, just muted when they
are not activated. That way the tables are always kept in sync.

Thanks for answering Daniel.

Well,

But then Osc 2 won't have anything to sync with?
Won't it need a waveform?

Great! I think I have 1.0, how do I get 1.1?
Couldn't see it at the website.

No it just syncs to the frequency afaik! It is the waveform of the
oscillator that you sets the ringmod/sync on that matters.
