MD Signal level / distortion

MD Signal level / distortion

2003-02-11 by Andy D

I'm a bit confused by how the master volume level relates to the distortion.

Surely when I increase or decrease the master volume, any fx levels should do the same in proportion. But I find the master volume increases distortion. This makes it very difficult to have a default setting going into my mixer, - I always have to change the master volume on the MD to get the right sound / level of distortion.

Is it that you can intentionally overdrive the outputs for effect?

Am I being dim or is there a setting?
Cheers,
Andy

It seems like you get distortion IN the mixer (check with earphones
plugged into MD).
Well, if you like it, then you should try a dedicated overdrive unit
and not stress that much your mixer :-)
Are you sure that levels are set correctly? gain? any feedback?

Or you could be overdriving the MD outputs, but I don't think that's
easy.

Um, yeah - you're right! I was being duh. The MD outputs seem to run really hot, so even with my Yamaha 01V inputs on minimum, the signal distorts with just a little increment. Because the distortion sounded so musical, I assumed it was a deliberate MD effect!

Oh well, as long as I know what it is.

Cheers,
Andy
