I love my MD, I agree it is the 'best Drum Machine Ever' This does not
mean I do not think it can be improved. I am afraid that Elektron will do
what it did with the Sid and make it 'almost' perfect, but not go the last
5% of the way. They seem to get really stoked on their gear, and then lose
interest in it, and move on to a new project. As an ex-sid owner and MD
owner, I get the feeling, both have been abandoned as new projects came up,
and I think it's a shame as both have so much more potential than the end
product showed. I see flaws in the OS, and the beauty of the MD, is the OS
is COMPLETELY in software, that means that the POTENTIAL Is there to rewrite
and hack the software to improve it. No flash roms, nothing hardwired,
that's why I honestly had hoped for more new features and such.

When I bought my MD 18-20 months ago, there was a muted thought on this
list and dare I say from Elektron themselves, that because of the MD's
software OS approach, there would be a continual tweaking and addition to
it's feature set. While other DSP stuff would be nice, it doesn¹t surprise
me that they simply do not have the power to supply more, and to be honest,
this is the least of my interests....though I would LOVE some new sounds
(building block stuff like waveforms and DIFFERENT LFO's, which is my
ultimate dream) what I really would wish to see was interface options, and
the ability to customize far more. (LFO speeds are something I have been
requesting a change in since day one...from 64 on they are all a blur, and a
waste. choosing 96 or 110 really doesn¹'t make a difference, it seems so
stupid to me, when I could use *L*FO's, like the name implies, you know? why
not find a way to slow them WAY down....maybe this can't be done, I don't
know, but this is the sort of thing I would like to have thought about at
least)

In an age when software continually updates and improves, I think
hardware companies, especially small ones that charge very high fee's for
their not incredibly reliable (this is not a criticism, merely a fact that
the MD has been a fairly unreliable product for a lot of people, myself
included) gear, are going to have to have value added features such as
continual OS improvements to keep people interested.......and I am somewhat
surprised at how at odds my outlook is with most on the list.

I suppose what it comes down to is that the image I always had of
Elektron was of music freaks and hackers, and people who were trying to push
the boundaries, and when I have seen their first two machines get to a level
of stability and nothing more (That sounds like a diss, it is not meant to
be, I KNOW they are amazing machines, I've owned them both, I mean further
improvements after the crashing stopped) I am disappointed, as I had always
envisioned them as being continuously morphing, improving gear.....software
mentality in a hardware format....Perhaps I am alone in having thought this
way about them.......

I like my MD, a LOT, I still find a lot of things about it lacking and
counter-intuitive, and the fact the it COULD be altered, and isn't, get's
under my skin. Open source the bastard!

Only time will tell :)

Now THAT would be sweet! :-)
