Machinedrum and Evolver - Live pattern switching, howto:

Machinedrum and Evolver - Live pattern switching, howto:

2003-06-20 by Ronald

Hi,

I've been experimenting with the Evolver and a Machinedrum for an
easy setup wich i can use in my Live set. (Mix it with a RS7000)
The results are better than expexted so that's why i post it here:

Set the Machinedrum as master and slave the Evolver.(midi clock in)
Set the Trigger Select on the Evolver on MSR (combo mode 2)
Set Evolver on channel 16
Place on track 16 of the MD a midimachine chan. 16
Than place a note on the first step of track 16 (MD)
Program this step with parameter locks:
- Pitch for the pitch of the Evolver. (NOTE)
- Program change voor the pattern of the Evolver.(PCHG)

Results:
When you change pattern on the MD the Evolver will also change
pattern exact at the beginning of the pattern without glitches or
sync problems.(the evolver will always be retriggering the sequencer
(MSR) so it will keep in pace with the MD)
When you program more steps on track 16 with other pitches you can
make the sequences play on different transpose value's.
When you place steps on even steps you can even make the sequences
shift in time.
The MD also has another advantage: The program change is send only
once so you can switch programs on the Evolver untill you find a nice
one, than you proram this number in the step on the MD to lock it in
for automatic selection when you change patterns.

I played a lot with this setup yesterday and it worked perfect.
I didn't have to touch the Evolver so i could focus on the MD.
I changed al lot of patterns on the MD and the evolver changed
patterns with it exactly as i wanted.
When i muted track 16 the MD the Evolver mutes too!(MSR setting)
You can tweak the evolver if you want, it won't be reset by the
program change.

Enjoy!
Grtz. Ronald. (Roonan)

Thanks so much Roonan for sharing this
procedure. I was doing almost the exact same
thing except i did not use the MSR setting on Evolver.

I just tried it with Trigger Select to MSR and NOW
Evo is in sync with
MD, yes !. I can finally use Evolver program sequences
Live like i planed to.

These too, what a combo.
Machines falling in love :)

Thanks again Roonan,

Simon

Following the logic of the MD you are realising the possibilities of
the MD. I only wish for a live recording funtion of the MD to record
midi note. This only makes me stronger... Show us what you made...
MP3. No pressure intended. It seems like the perfect couple.

I knew the MD could to thism the problem was always with
Evolver. You are right about a live recording fonction.
this would be great.

MP3s will invade this site in a near future, i promess.

I have another for you guys. Is there a way to go from sequence
to just note trigerring with the MD-EVO team.
Let's i'm changing from one seq to another and then i want the
sequence on Evolver to stop, and start another seq again later .
Meanwhile MD is trigerring notes on Evo.

Maybe with CC messages ?

Cheers,

Simon

I tried it with a Korg Es-1 and Evolver a few months ago.
I could not have patterns changing on Evolver when slaved to
the Es-1. So don't know about Er-1 but i guess you would
get the same result.

I will post something within a month or so.
Right now i'm programming my ass off for my next performance.
And indeed, they are a perfect couple!

Yes you can!
I figured this out this weekend.
It's easier than you may think:
Setup the Evolver like i mentioned but set the Trigger sel of the
program you only want to trigger notes to MID.
The sequencer keeps running but won't trigger the envelopes, so you
don't have to stop the sequencer.
This way you can use the evolver sequencer in one program and just
hit notes in another, perfect!!!!

I guess not.
You can trigger notes and/or sequences on the evolver but you can't
store program changes on the Er1.
So you will have to switch programs manually on the Evolver just
before the new cycle from wich a midi note could act as sync trigger.
It's possible but very tricky!

This is fantastic !
Thanks again Ronald.
Mr Smith DID covered
almost every Midi setup with need.
I still think there's a need for a way
to change patterns directly on Evolver
without losing sync, but i have
to say i'm impressed with the rest.
:)

Cheers,

Simon
