Sid heresy

2003-06-22 by oldmanfury

Hello,

I love the sound of the SID - which really was the first "synth" I
ever owned. Problem is, I'm cheap, and the Sid station is getting
horribly expensive ($950). Has anyone pursued any of these
alternatives? (yes, it is heresy to bring this up on the elektron
page... I know). I could buy a used one... but these look pretty
attractive.

Quadrasid VSTI?

Hardsid Quatro PCI? Four sids, one PCI slot - sounds good to me!
http://www.hardsid.com/

Midi Sid? (cheap, tiny, and a fun project? - build the controller
too, and it looks much like the Sid Station)

Since elektron raised the price, people have been dumping them on ebay,
so a used one isn't that cheap anymore either.

Kind of buggy, in my experiance.

I'd love to get one of these. You can mix and match SIDs, too! Two
6581s and 8580s, whee :D

I'm in the middle of amassing parts for this one. I haven't put
anything like that together in a long time, but I've seen tougher
projects to follow.

Not entirely true. I just saw one go for $361. And for the most part,
they are still costing less than the Sidstation did when it was first
released (roughly $500). Of course, some people bid them way up there
occasionally.

I'd like to do this too (although I own a Sidstation). Some aspects of
the projects are unclear to me, though. But maybe I'm just dense when
it comes to that stuff :-)

Joe.
