MD into Ableton Live

MD into Ableton Live

2003-12-29 by hesitantmoth

I am about to make the leap and buy a MD, only I have a software-only
background and need some very basic hardware advice...

So basic in fact, that I need to know how to route MD (i.e. and with
what kind of cables )into my Powerbook and then to Ableton Live. For a
sound card I have been considering either an Indigo io, M 410 or a 828
MkII.
I probably won't be using any other hardware besides a MD, so I wonder
if the 828 is too extravagant for my plan, especially considering the
price.

A friend recommended a Mackie mixer to go along with the M 410, but I
must admit I don't have a clue as to why a mixer would be useful --
really my only mission is to route MD into Live.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Jonathan

well, the details of that are more for the Ableton list. but it's
really simple, once you have your soundcard configured to work with
Ableton. then there's a couple different ways to do it, depending on
how you want to record the sample. but the details are documented in
the Ableton manual pretty well and they're incredibly simple.

sorry if I'm sounding mean here, but the details of this are not MD
specific. the same thing you would do to sample any synth/mixer/audio
device into Ableton can be done for the MD.

it most definitely is. you can get a much simpler interface for less
than half the price; and still get what you need.

I would recommend a mixer as well. I'm willing to bet that once you
start playing with the MD, you'll see how much fun it is and how
"live" it can be. so using it alongside Ableton compositions (which
may or may not include MD samples of its own) is certainly something
you'll want to try out (in fact, I do this a lot - controlling both
Ableton and the MD; it works very well and is quite a powerful live
setup). and you'll need a mixer to combine the signals from the MD and
your Mac.

but I would suggest checking out the Behringer stuff. they're of
comparable quality to the Mackies. you can get a bare-bones mixer (to
combine just these two devices) for less than 100 USD whereas the
cheapest Mackie is 400 USD and has more than you need on it.

Good luck!
Joe.

Mackie actually released a lower end mixer called the Tapco, which is
sub-200.

I have a small Spirit I use, which was only around 150.

I'm just getting my way around an Ableton demo with my powerbook
too. Your inputs on the sound card depend on whether you're going
to use the other outputs and inputs on the Machinedrum. I say start
simple.
If you are going to use other options you might as well lose a bit
money than waste alot of money on something you dont use. The 828
is nice for all the routings but you may not use them all. If you
are going to record different inputs of the machinedrum into
Ableton and record it all in some other software in the mac get
something like 828. You might be better off with a Berhinger and an
Indigo io if you aren't too sure. Does the Indigo have midi io? Of
course middle of the road is nice with the 410 instead of the
Indigo. You could wait for some of the new Ego-sys stuff.

You could route audio machinedrum > mixer > interface. I don't see
a reason to record the MD in Ableton much. You need midi wise
machinedrum > interface. Interface is your Indigo, 410, or 828.

You are going to need some 1/4"(stereo pair) audio cables and two
short midi cables at least.

My current live setup is currently a pc laptop running Live, and a layla24,
I have it set up so A and B are dry, C and D go to an electrix mo-fx, E goes
to a moogerfooger mf-101, and F is a 3rd dry signal, all going to ins 1-6 on
the layla, and then through live via 6 live input channels.
With this setup its pretty easy to switch a few wires around and have a send
in live send to the md's in's for some real fun :-)
