One final Sidstation request... please

One final Sidstation request... please

2004-01-26 by bachypham

have a function that triggers a root midi note to play a patch when
you press the # and * keys at the same time- pressing them both at
the same time again can turn it off. That way I can lay in bed
before I go to sleep with only my sidstation and create and audition
patches. This one seemingly simple function would entirely improve
the ergonomics of this piece for the better. Who here would like to
see this?

... and maybe get rid of that terrble bug that sometimes totally
erases all of my patches for no reason.

I would love this. In a huge, huge way.

Daniel? Is this possible? You all seem to love to make UI just
loverly. ;-]

after a night of serious sidstation programing :-)

Once more Yes vote. I asked Elektron about how to do "free running"
patches once and they said there was no way. This idea makes perfect
sense, as long as the hardware can detect multiple simultaneous key
presses (it may not be able to do that).

HaHa ! I vote for it tooooo !

( but to be serious - i don´t think there will be any update for
sidstation in next time. This type of discussion is coming up from
time to time now but electron seems to totally focus on their other
products now. It would be nice when some third party people could
tweak the station )

Come on, Daniel -- prove this guy wrong. Without the loyal legions of SIDstation users there wouldn't *be* an Elektron or an MD or a MnM today.

I would love that functionality added to the sid. It would enable my next
album "creating loops while i poops." No, seriously though, I think this is
one of the few things that could improve the sidstation.

Hehe,
with that name i think it will be a in top 10 charts ;)
Someone should maybee midifice Britney Spears and connect it to the
sidstation....

Just a thought about OS Updates requests; Maybee we all should write
electron personally. I don´t think they are always reading in yahoo
groups. And writing them an email garantee us an answer. I know i did
so and they are writing back soon. Come on, let´s spam their maibox ;)

cheers

will there ever be a service manual? schematics? source code?

my sid was stolen last year, but I plan on getting another one soon and
would like to be able to keep it going indefinitely...

Elektron has good support facilities in the US and the UK. They also
have reserves on hand for high quality SID chips, something I believe
they've got the monopoly on (if they could find more, I'm sure they'd
sell more SidStations).

Source code I'd bet they'd never release. Tons of very usable IP that
I'm sure made it in one form or another into the Monomachine. The
amount of work it'd take to deal with customers who fried their own Sid
messing with the source hugely outweighs the benefit of releasing the
source (which is none, except to perhaps 10 or 15 Sid owners, which is
a gracious estimate.

Unfortunately the key scanning hardware doesn't allow more than one
key to be read at a time.

Also, updating the SID-OS is nothing that could be done in an
afternoon, and should be considered only if we'd get some major
improvements. First I'd need to get into my old heavily optimated 8-
bit source code, do the changes, and make it pretty likely that I
don't introduce any new bugs. That's more the common rule though,
especially if I'd dig into the inner depths.

Then when a new OS is released we'd get a hell with people running
into problems with the upgrades. It seems as the SYSEX support in the
MIDI drivers have detoriated over the years, we can see that with
more people running into problems upgrading their Machinedrums over
time. With the Machinedrum you always keep the latest successfully
updated OS in memory, but the SidStation doesn't have the memory for
this, so if you fail you'd be left with a dead unit and curse those
damn Elektrons while paying the postage to and from Sweden. Sure,
there is also the "emergency upgrade mode" that should be activated
if the upgrade fails, but still the SYSEX upgrade of the SidStation
is a delicate process that better not fail.

What I'm saying is that we'd better have a very good reason for
getting everyone to upgrade.

Daniel

hi daniel,
this sounds complicated to me. i wish it would be more fun to do some
nice changes on the os. however i think it should be no problem to
find good reasons to update the os. i have read and written a few
suggestions here along with others. but it would not make me happy
when my sidstation or elektron loses mind.
cheers ;)
