I heard Bad things about the MD

I heard Bad things about the MD

2004-03-23 by binaryzero1

Hi...
I heard about pot meters / dials breaking off or getting lose (sorry
for my bad english, i hope i spell this right)
And i heard this was fixed with new dials on the newer models.
My dials are dark grey/almost black are this the old or newer dials ?
And someone said to me: the problem with the pots will happen to
everyone some day between now and 2 years. So im wondering what
other people think about this and maybe tell me if i got the new or
old dials.

the original (first 100 beta machines) batch had encoder problems, but these
were repaired under warranty and that was three years ago anyway.

they're also doing new MD encoders since the introduction of the Monomachine,
but this is because of the feel of the encoders (they have more resistance
and values can be fine-tuned easier) rather than because of problems.

they all look the same.

I've only heard of one person who had problems with his and he travelled with
it frequently and seemed to have a not-so-great case.

the encoders are plastic so they are of course more brittle than metal
counterparts and if you place enough sideways force on them they will
break. so just keep this in mind when you're handling/packing it and you
should be fine.

and regarding the knobs falling off of the encoders themselves....I doubt
it. I've had to take them off before on both my MD and my MnM and it was
not easy. so unless you've popped them on and off a bunch of times, they
should be very tight on there.

Hope that helps!

Hi,

I have one of the beta-units (#46 I guess). When I got it, the knobs
were replaced by Elektron. So I got it with new set of knobs. Now
I've been using it extensively approx 2 years and the knob B is
starting to act weird (it really has seen extensively use, but with
care). It doesn't react right when I turn it. I manage with it, but I
have to replace it some day in future. Since I own a beta-unit it
isn't so bad, because Elektron has promised a life-time warranty for
beta units knobs. It's still a little disapointting to see them go
broek, since the unit itself is build like a tank. I must say I
wouldn't exchange this thing to anything else, even if it knobs
brokes once a year.

Toni.

rotary encoders go bad over time. Its just what happens to any gear although 2 years is a little short in a life . At least the company should realize that they need to keep a high stock of this part for future ills.

Or raise the encoder quality if it's not just a single issue.
Now given the way ALPS catalogues are made, I can understand Elektron
if they stick to these ;)

Now it's rather logical the mecanic parts wear off. It's part of their
job unfortunately.

It's a common repair on Nord modulars too (the big encoder dial). As
it's a standard part, no problem.

My B knob is also wonky. I guess it's just worn out. When I turn it
sometimes the value jumps around or it suffers a delayed reaction.
