Elektron Musical Instruments

this is probably a long shot, but maybe it would be possible to get an open 
source gameboy emulator, and perhaps use some good old computer skills to make 
a sort of software synth.
Not too sure how to do it, but my brother  ( supreme audio-geek for a small 
third party GBA developer) has written some programs that let him do just that. 
Isn't hardware, but these days GB emulation has come a long way. Given you 
have the technical prowess.....LOL but who does these days  ( call me lazy 
again).
