Plastikman

I'm not really into his music, but I'm guessing that some of you will
find this interesting:

I just read a review of his performance at Mutek this past weekend and
it was reported from
those up front that he was using a Machinedrum a large portion of the
time (alongside a
303, Ableton and possibly a 909).

I've got an inquiry, off topic...

Why are people so interested in what other folks use to get their music
done? I've never understood this one... well, that's not entirely
true, I thought like this eaaaaaarly on when I had no idea what
anything was, but pretty quickly it became clear that most of the tools
available are insanely powerful, and as long as you're pretty good
about doing a bit of demo use and manual reading pre purchase, you'll
be amply enabled. So, since then, I've just looked at how I'm
producing right now, what seems to be a barrier, and I find software or
kit to facilitate that.

Occasionally, I've hoped for 'inspiring' gear, and bought something
somewhat randomly. This only worked with the Machinedrum, for me.

Is it really a goal for so many people to be cover musicians? Wanting
that specific synth with the hopes of getting that specific sound? Is
that the case?

I really am sincerely baffled by the whole kit list mindset. Why do
people care?

personally, I just find it interesting to learn how people get their
sound. it has nothing to
do with wanting to imitate them or their sound, really. occasionally
though, if I see that
someone I like uses a certain item that I had been wondering about,
then I may
be motivated to investigate it more. but the decision of whether or not
to purchase a piece
of gear is never (and shouldn't be) motivated by who uses it.

my thought on the Plastikman thing was just that it was interesting,
given that he's well
known for using the classic Roland TR-X0X drum machines and people have
sometimes
criticized the MD for not being enough like those machines (but
personally, I couldn't
care less if it sounded like them or not). so maybe it would cause
some people to
investigate the MD more than they would have otherwise (see above).

p.s. and besides, wasn't it you who pointed out that LFO was using
a Monomachine on stage? :-)

Guilty as charged, that was more about Elektron and good for them than
personal interest though. I think we all have high hopes for elektron
getting visibility and business. Gives us better products.
