Does your emax have an external scsi port? Is your zip hooked up to it?
If so, you need the Emax Plus OS, if you have that, you hold down the transpose button and you see the scsi ID at zero (this specifies the internal Hard Drive) Press whatever SCSI ID the zip is twice while the transpose button is held and it should change if the device is connected properly. Once it is something other than zero, the format HD command will format the zip. This is a much quicker format than the internal HD.
A good way to test if you have the Plus OS is to hold the transpose button, if it says SCSI ID under transpose, you have plus and can proceed.
I am not sure why I have to hit the number twice, but for some reason it doesn't register when I only press it once.

Subject: [emax] Formatting Zip Disk (Emax 1 se hd plus)
I've got an Emax 1 hd se plus that currently has an internal hard
drive. I would
like to format a Zip disk connected to the external scsi connection.
I don't think
there is a way to specify which hd to format -the internal hd, or the
zip. Looks
like the existing internal drive is the only one visible to the Emax.
1) To format an external Zip disk would I have to disconnect the
internal hd,
and boot the Emax from floppy? Select format hd.
2) I also have an internal scsi Zip drive sitting around and wanted
to know if
it's difficult to connect the wires if it were to be put in place of
my
existing internal
hd?
Thanks,
Peter
