i have done the same on some and they work fine the vfd is the best looking 
one

nice and bright

but i did a oled white version and that looked good aswell but with the 
5year only for the led lettering i am not convinced yet

Yes it does press a bit when tightened, but the buttons seem even on mine, 
perhaps 1 or 2 mm are harder for me to gauge, I'll check, but I suspect you 
are right.  Still preferrable to me than doing irreversible mods to the PCB, 
if I broke it I'd have to send it to you jammie!

yes but it does press against the front panel when tightened

and the top buttons are set back farther

I put the VFD into my emax rack without any trace or PCB cutting, I just
used very thin insulated wires to wire it in and also to secure it in place.
