reseat all the IC's on the audio board that are socketed. you may have a bad connection to a chip. you may also have a floating ground or voltage on the ground from a bad wire / cable that you are using to sample in, or also a ground difference level between your input device and the emax. As stated before SE disk does not update anything else or make any other changes. the SE update disk only updates bits in an EEPROM IC that holds calibration parameters and the like. Not the system firmware EPROM. - the Emax has no circuit / capability to update the main system firmware EPROM, unlike newer video cards and pc motherboards that have that kind of capability (flash update). But again I don't think that the SE update is your issue. I don't know what is meant by "kettle lead" ???.... If it plays fine with a previously sampled sound, it doesn't make any sense to blame the power supply. If the power supply were injecting something into the circuit, I would expect you would hear it at other times, not just sampling but also playback. as to some harsh sound when you power up, you may have a bad solder causing an arc on the power supply, it's connector, or power switch COULD be going bad. There is no way to know it without seeing the unit. If you don't know electronics, you should have someone with electronics repair knowledge look at it (Jammie is in the UK as I see you are also, per your email address) Suggest you contact him and have him take a look.
