bizarre Emax I problem...

2003-08-28 by S. Glitsos

Okay, my Emax has developed a really, really weird problem:

If I try and load a disk that I format, the Emax flashes "Different Software
Rev" -- even though it's not! It'll load the official Emu disks that I have
just fine, it formats the disk just fine, it copies software, etc.... but
when I actually try and use the disk, I get the different rev error.

It'll boot normally off the official Emu disk.. if I try and boot off a disk
that I made, it hangs at "E-mu Systems Inc. Loading Software." It also
emits some really weird stuff - like rising then descending tones, amazing
sounding drones (they're good enough to sample, funny huh?), weird wobblies.

I don't get it. I've done everything at my disposal... changed disks, used
different OSes (I have 3.2 and SE 1.1 on disk -- yes, I'm sure that I was
using the right disk with the right OS and all that). I swapped drives with
an inoperable Emax that I have for parts, same thing.

This is really weird, it's been working fine up until now. Can someone help
me out?

Sounds like the Emax is not reading the disks
properly.
Have you tried cleaning your floppy disk drive with a
cleaning disk?
Are you putting these floppies in a PC that has a
Virus?

Well, it loads the factory disks just fine, every bit perfectly (yes, I've
gone through every single preset on the disks...). It's just when I format
a disk.. it's VERY consistent in how it doesn't work, so I doubt that it's
just dirty.

Example: I'll format an Emu disk, which previously worked (I know, I
know... I just wanted to see if I just had a load of crappy disks), but when
formatted it STOPS working.

I'm not even using a PC, so the virus thing isn't really possible.

I don't know.

Any other ideas?

RE: [emax] bizarre Emax I problem...

2003-08-28 by Rob Keeble

Hi,
Your Emax might have lost a setting in the EEPROM, which controls software
release compatibility (e.g. refusing to load an SE OS when its not been
officially upgraded.) . IF it is this problem, then buy another Emax.

i have the same problem with an emax turbo ..
it seems i can load an emax disk or emax II disk ... but not one to the
other ..
unless i shut it off and then boot from the disk that i want the sound off
of,
then it loads just fine ... but if i go to save it , it saves it to disk but
won't reload it ,
thats when i get the dif. software rev. message !?!?!!?!?!????!?!?!?!!!?!?

i guess both disks have different versions of
the operating system which seem to be non compatable with each other ....
