Emax II ... Heeeeelp

2003-10-23 by davidhadzis

Dear All,

I am a brand new Emax II owner, realizing a 10 year dream... BUT
while I was formatting the hard disk to erase everything that the
previous owner had left on it, the lights went out...

The Emax II was set to boot on SCSI 1... And now, no matter if I
insert the system floppy disk, the Emax II won't start.

Would anyone be good enought to help me on this?

Also, I have an Apple CD-150 CD drive, but it does not seem to
work. Is it supposed to work with the Emax II or should I try Ebay
for another drive?

Many thanks,

David Hadzis

when you say "won't start" what exactly do you mean. Is it powering up? Is it looking at
the floppy but it keeps spinning? Is it powering up but locking up with some of the panel
lights on?

The more information you can give the easier it will be to help.

Dear John,

Many thanks for your interest in my problem! It is powering up, and
it looks for the SCSI 1 channel for a while. Then it looks for all
other channels, except the floppy where the system disk is
inserted! It had been previously set on "Boot from SCSI 1", and I'm
afraid that it has saved this information in a chip somewhere...

Any idea?

Many thanks,

David.

Hi David,

I had the same problem with my Emax II and the Apple CD150 drive... I
replaced it by an Apple CD300 which is working perfectly!

If I remember well, there was a discussion on the different versions of the
CD300 drive in this newsgroup (last year ??) - have a look to the archive!

Best wishes,
Chris

If you have a disk in the floppy on power-up it should boot from that regardless to if you
have it set to boot from any other SCSI ID#. Yes, it does store the boot ID even after
power off, but it should be looking at the floppy first and foremost, the fact that it doesn't
see the floppy drive is the first thing I would try to solve by reseating the ribbon
connector. Can you tell if the floppy is powering up at all?

Has it been moved lately? Perhaps something came loose.

Dear John,

The floppy does definitely power up. The red light is constantly
on. But it has been moved (my Emax II arrived from Germany). So I
will try to open it, double check the ribbon and come back to you if
the problem is still there... Otherwise, maybe I should consider
purchasing one of these Emax hard disks full of sounds?...

Take care,

David.

Re: [emax] Re: Emax II ... Heeeeelp

I wouldn't purchase anything yet. It definitely should be booting from the floppy. The fact
that it crashed during a format is not a good sign. Normally what would happen if the
hard drive was bad is that it would have locked up typically during the Verifying stage,
but when that happens typically turning it off then on the causes it to work fine and the
hard drive to be formatted. The lights going out is more than likely a sign that something
inside is loose or faulty.

Dear Chris,

I just got an Apple CD 300 plus and I just can't make it work on my
Emax II. Did you do any particular setup?

Many thanks,

AW: [emax] Re: Emax II ... Heeeeelp

2003-11-27 by Dr.-Ing. Christian Gritzner

Hi David,

I am not sure if I have a CD300 or CD300+ (I think it is the non-plus
version).
But first check the ID number of your drive which may not be 0 (reserved for
floppy) or 1 (if you have a HDD). Check also if all (!) SCSI devices are
powered on before you switch on your Emax. Make sure that the drive is well
terminated.
I first tried the CD300 alone with a termination plug and now together with
a Iomega ZIP 100MB and an EZ Flyer 230MB in a line. The ZIP is at the end of
the line because it has a switchable termination (which works with this
setup).

Hope I could help!
Best wishes,
Chris

Emax II ... Heeeeelp

2003-11-28 by Jo ã o Ferreira Gomes

Hi David,

I've got such a unit (I'm also not sure if it's a plus or non plus model). I
had some problems with it in the beginning. Apparently there are two
different versions of the Apple CD300, one has a caddy for you to put the CD
into and the other more recent one has a tray which slides from inside the
unit. This second version does not work with the Emax. I had to put an add
in Loot, a classified adds newspaper in London, saying I would trade my more
recent version of the unit for the older one and it worked for me (that was
a bit lucky though, I think).

Hope this helped,

João Gomes
