installing a drive?

installing a drive?

2000-11-16 by xenoangelos

I recently purchased a used Seagate 600MB
internal harddrive. I can get the emax II to
recognize it and start to format it but after
about 15 minutes of formatting I get an SCSI:
software error. Is the drive no good or am I
doing something wrong? Can someone give me a step
by step on installing and formating a HD?
Help.... I can stand floppies no longer!

Hi,
The Emax II will only format and work with certain hard drives, so this may be one that does not work or it has a problem.
Before looking for another drive...check
1. The drive is terminated. Check the settings that are usually printed on the drive.
2. The SCSI ID is unqiue (not 0 )

Keep in mind the partition limit is 540mb. Chances are the drive isn't
compatible because of it's size. I know it's been said an Emax II will
format drives larger than 540Mb ignoring the remaining sectors, but I've
never had any actual proof of this theory. The few times I've heard
about people trying it has failed or hung up in the format process
(especially in the verify stage).

Find someone with a scsi computer (such as a Mac), and try formatting it to
see if the drive is good or not.

RE: installing a drive?

2000-11-17 by LeValley, R. Todd (NBC)

Just last night I successfully installed a Quantum ProDrive LPS 525 in my
Emax II, which I ordered from Other World Computing.

The drive was $24.50, and I bought a 3 connecter internal SCSI cable from
them for $10. They charge $5 for 2nd day FedEx Shipping.

I found a web page that had the jumper settings for the drive, and I set it
to SCSI ID1, parity on, and termination on. The drive did take FOREVER to
format and verify - I think about an hour and a half. But it now boots off
the drive, and loading banks off the drive is fast.

I didn't have any way to mount the drive properly, I just shoved it
underneath the floppy drive. Unfortunately, it is very loud, and I think
that may be because it is vibrating against the metal shield of the floppy.
There is a lot of room in the keyboard case, in fact enough to easily
install another drive.

Anyone have any tips on how to mount a drive in an Emax II keyboard? And
also, what is involved with upgrading the power supply to support 2 internal
drives? Anyone have some tips on installing a PC power supply?

And, does anyone have the Emu sound library for the EmaxII they would let me
borrow to load onto my drive?

That's odd. The Emax II rack has the mounting hardware built in. I find
it unusual that the keyboard doesn't have it as well, unles you got
yours used and the previous owner removed it. It should be a brass
colored plate attached to 4 mounts with screws. You remove it, attach
the drive to it and then place it back on the mounts and screw it in. (I
think that's right) can you atleast find the 4 screw mounts?

Self sticking velcro might work too...

You could attatch other scsi drives externally, you
just need a housing. You can get them with a power
supply and a switch to change you ID with out having
to fiddle with jumpers.
