Swapping Parts & Problems (EmaxII)

Swapping Parts & Problems (EmaxII)

2004-02-09 by Christopher

I recently purchased a lovely EmaxII 8mb Rackmount unit whose only
problem seems to have been a blown fuse, for $50...once I replaced
the fuse (for the power switch: 250, 2a) everything works fine
EXCEPT:
1)it has an internal SCSI Quantum ProDrive Els (40mb i believe) and
everytime i plug into the external SCSI, the Emax recognizes
neither...I even tried changing the SCSI boot id and it recognized
both until i tried loading a bank, when it proceeded to cop out with
the SCSI Hardware error...also, it recognizes the external with no
problems if the internal is disconnected...

Problem 2) the lcd display, probably due to my muckin' around with
the guts lost it's light, except for when i press on it...the lcd
thing is a common problem I hear...also could be a victim of the
original power surge which blew the fuse....

As a solution to the Lcd problem, and as a precaution against further
power supply problems, I swapped guts with my emax2 keyboard, that
is, I put the whole shebang from the rackmount:drives, output
board...everthing except the power supply and whatever else I can't
remember...so I now have the same scsi problem, which I don't really
care about anyway, except as one of those things that should work but
doesn't...and the lcd problem is fixed BUT: the realtime wheels don't
affect the samples no matter what I do...control enable is fine etc
etc...
Now what I'm thinking is that either I can solve this problem
(someone can walk me through replacing the lcd and verifying the
integrity of the rack's power supply) or I can just put the 8mb rack
guts into my 2mb rack (or was it 4?)and let you folks fight it out
over whats left over: a 2(or4)mb rack synth with lcd and possible
power supply problems, and a keyboard version (1mb) with a fried
output board, one broken key, one fried key (samples won't go to it),
and minus a fuse or two..

Please respond with qyestions and suggestions...if you're going to
ask me if i considered obvious sources of the technical difficulties
(besides my own bungling ie: fried 1mb output board)then please
follow up with something less obvious...try to stick to layman's
terms but don't shy away from using chip names, etc. as long as you
can tell me where to look. Hah , sorry about the fine print... i'll
take what I can get ;)

An external drive has to be terminated or the SCSI chain won't work.

Try this company for replacement LCD backlight: http://www.telesisgear.com though if I
remember their prices might have seemed a little high. I thought Emulator Archive had
some information on replacing LCD's as well.

So neither the Pitch Bend or the Right Wheel work under any of the assignments? My
guess is either you've got the ribbon cable plugged in incorrectly, or something else is
fried.

Hi Christopher

I'm not an expert on this subject but here is my suggestions:

1) When you plug in an external drive your problem could be 2 things. The first thing might be that your external drive is not switched to terminate on. Both ends of a scsi chain must be terminated.

The second thing is that your EmaxII cannot recognize your external drive. The EmaxII is very selective regarding HD drives. Try and check www.emulatorarchive.com to see the EmaxII HD compatibility list. Of caurse the drives must not have the same scsi ID either. Each HD ID has to be unique.

2) If your display lights up when you push down on it, then it's likely that you have a loose connection. You can fairly easely dismantel the curcuit behind the display and solder the 2 connectors back to it's place.

I hope this helps

Brian

An external drive has to be terminated or the SCSI
chain won't work.
So, uhhh, how do I terminate the chain? Like, to get
access to both the internal hd and external scsi at
the same time instead of just separately??

I thought Emulator Archive had
some information on replacing LCD's as well.
Yeah, actually on ebay right now there are some
backlights for sale, specifically for the emax2 and
others...WWW.BACKLIGHTS.CO.UK (23.99 i think that's
usd...it's definitely not pounds..)

-myself I'm wondering if it's just that the rackmount
hardware doesn't have the RT wheels programmed in
except for midi...i'll try again with the keyboard
synth's original guts just to make sure it's not the
ribbon (the one that leads to the wheels is keyed
after all)
one of my main concerns is still the power supply: is
the original problem which blew the fuse internal or
external...and did it affect anything permanently? How
can I test this...I understand there is a technical
manual fro the emax2 but the emulator archive link is
out of date (last time i checked)...

I've honestly never seen an external hard drive, but it has to be one of these solutions;

My external Syquest drives came with a termination plug that goes over the unused
SCSI socket on the back of the unit. In my chain the Emax II has an internal 500Mb hard
drive (which is jumpered to terminate I believe) and the external SCSI jack is plugged
into a Syquest EZ-135. On the leftover jack on the back of the EZ-135 I have a SCSI
Terminator on it. So if your external drive has 2 SCSI ports on it for chaining you need to
put a termination plug on one, they can be found on ebay for cheap seach for SCSI
+terminator. The other solution would be if an external hard drive had jumpers like an
internal drive does, then you would need to set the jumpers for termination.

yes, but remember it's 23.99 USD + shipping and possibly taxes and it has to be
shipped from the UK. Though I imagine it's still cheaper than the $50 Telesis is going to
charge.

Go under Master | 9/Special | 5/MIDI Analyzer and see if it is even receiving the MIDI
signal for the wheel. Upon moving the wheel it should report Controller 1 and the value
should move up and down in correspondence the wheel on your controller. If not could
there be a chance that your right wheel isn't sending out Controller 1 signals some
keybopard allow you to assign different CC numbers to the wheels?

If you have a bank that has the RT Wheel assigned to something it should work whether
it's loaded into a rack or a keyboard version. I just loaded the 4M Pop Composer factory
bank into my Emax II rack, I use an SY77 as a controller and both the pitch bend and
the Mod 1 wheel work as well as the 2 footswitches. I've never edited this bank.

The assignments are: 1:1 2:4 3:0 4:0 5:0 6:0 7:3 8:6 Also remember that you not only
have to assign what each wheel is going to control you have to set-up the range for the
process they are controlling, like the Pitch Bend range( under Preset Definition) or the
LFO rate which is assigned under Dynamic Processing.

Contact Rob at Emulator Archive directly you are going to need the service manual and
a volt meter, but do not attempt this if you are not completely comfortable with this kind
of service.
