emax hd size..?

emax hd size..?

2004-08-25 by Micke Askernäs

Hello all!

I have an old emax (well ... 2 actually, but one already has the hd, so
that one doesnt really count) ..

anyway: i was wondering what size hd i can use to put it into the machine?

I have found a few old ones ... down to 1 GB .. i dont care if i can use
all of the drive, I just want to know if my emax will be able to use a
larger drive than it normally uses..?

anyone have any idea.. ? =)

thanks,
Micke

If you are indeed refering to an Emax and not an Emax II the only drive you can replace
an existing drive with that would be bootable is the 20Mb Miniscribe 8425S (or 8425SA)
both are long out-of-print. If your unit is not already an HD model there is no way to
upgrade it to accept a hard drive. Route 66 studios are suppose to be at work on a new
SCSI chip to upgrade non-hd models.

Your best solution if you have an Emax HD model is to follow the instructions at the
Emulator Archive http://www.emulatorarchive.com on converting your internal SCSI port
into an external, upgrading to the Plus OS, and then you could use a Zip drive!

If you are referring to an Emax II, I have a list of some hard drives in my FAQ
http://www.silveriafamily.com/emax and I believe the Emulator Archive does as well. You
are limited to a partition of 540 Mb. Conner hard drives seem to be the most widely
compatible, what you need to make sure of is that it is SCSI type 1 compatible and
doesn't have any modern features like spinning down, powering down, stand-by or
anything like that. I've had personal issues with both Maxtor and Quantum drives in the
past, I currently have a 250Mb Maxtor drive inside mine and though it's noisy it works.

Thanks for the info!

It is indeed an emax that I am referring to.. and not the second one ... =p

One of the two that I have, have already a harddrive installed, and I've
been through them and I guess I can for the moment work with booting one
of them with diskette... I'm primarily using them for midi triggering for
live use.. Modified to look the way I want .. I'll post some pics in here
when I'm finished with the pair .. ;)

Speaking of .. I seem to recall somewhere someone talking about how to
replace the LCD ... with a blue-ish style LCD instead, which would look
great with the paintjob I'm doing on the machines...

.. any idea ?

Thanks for the help on the harddrive again.. I guess i'll have to make it
with the (only) working diskdrive i have inbetween the pair...

It's been so long. I could have sworn my Emax HD SE, when it was new, had a blue LCD
that gradually faded to green. Look at my website under repairs. I have both UK and US
based companies listed that offer replacement LCDs. I'm sure they could get you one in
a different color if they don't come in blue as standard.

Hi Micke

From this site you can get blue, green, yellow, orange, red and white backlights for the Emax at this site:

Best regards
