should i add a zipdive to my emax? is it worth it? how many banks can
i have on one zip? it´s 20mb limited, right? can i boot up from zip?
and afterall is it possible to add a zip to my unit - my emax has only
one pin connector at the back - i am not sure what it is - it´s maybe
not a scsi connector... hmmmmmmmmmm...

If your Emax is not already an HD model then you can't add SCSI. The Zip mod is
simply moving the internal SCSI jack to an external jack and swithcing to the Plus OS.
But, you first and foremost have to already have an HD model.

Typically it's going to be printed right on the front panel Emax logo. If it was upgraded to
HD it would typically have an HD sticker near the logo. Barring that you can open the
unit up, and look for the SCSI socket, but that can be very misleading as even non-HD
units have a non-functioning SCSI socket (that had to be replaced by E-mu when
upgraded to HD), if I remember right. It would be very difficult to get an Emax HD by
accident. The port you see on the back is indeed the RS-422 port for sample transfers
and for connecting the OMI CD-Rom drive.

ok thanks. then i have to live with that and hope that my diskdrive
never dies.. is there anything that can be done with that port on the
back? i am just curious... i own a casio fz10 sampler which has a
small port too, and there was developed a transfer procedur for pc/dos
and the fz, which i use. all is needed is a cable from fz-port to
printerport on pc.. and of course a little dos-programm to send files...

The Emax that I got off eBay turned out to be an HD without the
sticker.
The seller never said anything about it having a internal drive,
they only stated that they didn't have any floppies with O.S.
It was a pleasant surprise as was the conditon of the unit.

RE: [emax] Re: Zip,zip,zip

Hi,
E-mu shipped a variety of motherboards in Emaxs, especially in the late
80's. They sometimes put complete Emax HD boards into base Emax cases
because it was cheaper to produce them like that. So its always worth
looking inside your Emax to see what you have.

All Emaxs can be upgraded to HD and SCSI, but only Emaxs with a later
motherboard are in any way a practical proposition. Emax HD and Emax SE HD
are the right candidates for the job, and I can help with the necessary SCSI
connector and OS Plus and SE upgrades.

Non HD Emaxs are now very difficult to upgrade (and original Emaxs nearly
impossible), as new PAL chips are proving hard to burn, although the EPROM
and SCSI chip can be done, as can the necessary PCB cuts. All the
documentation is on the web site for those interested. The ZIP100 is a very
cool upgrade, and it will take 36 Banks, formats in 2 seconds, loads
quickly. And I have the OMI sample banks from the Emax OMI CDROM's as
ZIP100's....so you can access 700 sample banks for the Emax...

If anyone in the UK is after an Emax SE HD SCSI, I may be selling a rack or
keyboard unit in a few months, complete with ZIP100 drive and 30+ carts full
of Pro samples. And Sound Designer Universal for sample editing and maybe a
Mac too.. Just depends what kinda offer I get.

Regards
Rob

Re: Emax II? RE: [emax] Re: Zip,zip, zip

2004-10-04 by J R

I recently purchased a pristine Baldwin/Emax from
ebay. I opened it up this weekend and noted that the
necessary chips are not present or the wrong
type/number to do Rob (emuarchive's) SCSI upgrade.

Any recommendations on how to proceed and what the
chip/upgrade kits available will cost and how to get
them.

I have a mac running the soundesigner universal,
however, isn't there a more EMAX friendly software
suite out there? The samplers it lists on the pull
down menu are only Akai, Roland and the EMU SP1200.
I can't get it to transfer or upload samplers from or
to the computer. Maybe my serial port settings are
wrong?

Any help appreciated.--- Bob Conner

How can you tell on an Emax II if it has the internal
"HD" chipset/board, even if it was not sold a an HD
model?

All Emax II units have internal and External SCSI. The only upgrade that was performed
to early Emax II's was upgrading them from Mono to Stereo.. but very few of the mono
models ever exsisted and then all the memory options.
