Emax II's for parts

Emax II's for parts

2005-05-25 by Christopher

I have 1 emax II keyboard, & 2 emax II rackmounts. They all have the
same problem: I fried their output boards...this is the only thing
wrong with them, although one lacks a fuse...if anyone out there needs
spare parts or has an output board that works fro either a 1mb, 4mb, or
8mb unit let's talk. Ideally i'd like to get the 8mb or 4mb one working
again, I just need one for my setup, and i'd put the working guts in my
keyboard version. Anyone who knows what chips to replace, where to get
them, and how to fix 'em please contact me - I will be very grateful
and would be happy to send out my spares for shipping cost only if you
help me get my rig going again...On an aside, If i could get my hands
on an emax 1 keyboard with scsi, I may just offer up my three dead
friends to anyone who could use them...

thanks in advance, and check out my work @ http://www.ic-

Hey Christopher,
I don't think I can be of any real help to you, but if it comes down to it and you part the keyboard out, I really need a "B" key for my Emax l.
Or if anybody else know where I could get one, I'd be willing to pay for it. E-mail me at: songz4us@...

Thanks,

Russ

Shouldn't the output boards be repairable? You should be able to take them to a tech and have him fix it.

even if there is not tech in your area, you can send one rack unit and all 3 output boards.

How did you fry all 3? Phantom power?

noticed Emax with an XLR output

I was going through several old Dep mode tapes the other day and noticed that the Emax ll that were used on the faith and devotion tour have XLR outputs. Anyone else notice this or heard of this mod?

From http://www.tuug.fi/~jaakko/dm/keyboards.html

Devotional Tour -

"Martin Gore plays a Roland A-50 and Alan Wilder plays an Akai MX1000, each
controlling two Emulator Emax II samplers; Andrew Fletcher has another pair of Emaxes.
Each pair is hooked up in parallel, so if one were to malfunction, the other is ready. But "I
don't remember an instance when we had to go to a spare," says Wob Roberts, the
keyboard technician. Samples come from strange and sundry sources, including old
analog equipment."

To the best of my knowledge (front row seats and the DVD) none of the Emax II's had
XLR outputs.

My Emax II has xlr connectors, but I can't remember if
they were in or out or both...just that I recycled
some bad cables and made my own xlr to phono adaptor
cables.
Been many years since I actually used my II.
But it wasn't a special model or anything.

Well maybe my memory is bad, maybe I was going from
phono on the EmaxII to xlr on something else.
Will have to check my Emax II when I get home.

Re: [emax] noticed Emax with an XLR output

That maybe on the US tour but I have video of martin and others during the 1993 European tour playing the Emax 2 which is clear as day and quite easy to spot. This Emax 2 has an XLR out where the main outs or mix would be, not sure if your rig line up is accurate but I have it on tape and have watched it many times.

The reason I asked this question is that anyone playing in a synth band or any electronic musician knows that getting lots quarter inch lines to the house hundreds of feet away is bad news.
The only thing you can do is to purchase GOOD QUALITY line transformers at $50.00 each and double that if your running in stereo L & R and that's only one synth!

When I saw this I was quite impressed and curious about how this is done direct off the board, last year I researched Line transformers and discovered that there were no dual channel rack versions for running lots of lines for electronic musicians so I started to manufacture them.

If all goes well I may have them available on the www.Route66studios.com site but for now it's just building stages.

Re: [emax] noticed Emax with an XLR output

2005-05-27 by John Silveria

I'm all for creating new gear that fits the synth player market. I'm someone who has been
playing synths in bands for 20 years now and I've never had an issue with running lines
to house. I've never met anyone who didn't run there set-up through a on-stage mixer
first, then just run your stereo mix out lines through two transformers to the snake that
runs the lines to the house. I'm sure big bands like DM might not be running just a mix
out to the house, but I don't think the costs of transformers are a concern for them.
