com, usb and midi?

com, usb and midi?

2005-10-04 by Niklas Olsson

Hi,

What is the different between the ComPort on the computer main board
and the Com Port on older soundcards?

The reason I ask this is that I have a Y-cable midi/com and on my new
PC I have only one comport (if I don't put in my old soundcard), and I
think that the usb/midi connectors is expensive.

I do also wonder what is the different between the Y-cable ps2/usb and
midi/usb, more than the connection size?

cheers/
niklas

The port on a sound card is a game/midi port. It is 15 pins. Serial is
25 or 9 pins, parrallel is also 25 pins. USB is a 4 pin connection.
NONE of these can just be interconnected with an adapter except serial
9 to 25 adapters. PS2 to USB is not compatible with USB to MIDI. The
difference is not only the "connector size" but also how the wires
connect inside of those connectors.

It is common that people have plugged PARALLEL 25 pin plug onto SCSI 25
pin and blown out devices because the wires inside the cable connect to
different pins..... even though it was possible to "just plug them
together" A very expensive lesson for people!!!

It is very important when dealing with connections that you have a
correct converter, or that the actual device is the correct type for
the port you are plugging into...

Thanks,
Ted
