clock out on the emax

clock out on the emax

2006-04-05 by joechatman1122

Has anyone had any luck or problems with using the clock out on an EMAX
to trigger a piece of analog gear, I.E. Sequential Circuits Pro1- I
plug the clock out into the CV in and get nothing. Are these two jus
incompatible, or is there something I could be doing wrong, note I have
used a TR606 to clock the pro 1- thanks for your help

Emax SE HD OS problem

2006-04-05 by ted Summers

I have an Emax SE keyboard. I found a "non-working" emax rack HD on
ebay.
Exterior not in too good shape as it was further damaged in shipping.
Fuse holder missing - no wonder it "doesn't turn on" according to
seller.

Hard Drive is dead (multiple blinks- I have seen this before in old
macs), and system hangs on Diagnostics. This is fine so far.

I want to make my Emax SE keyboard an SE HD. It has a PC333 board.
I have 2 of the miniscribe 20MB drives that are known working.... I
have a brand new SCSI 5380 chip.
So I drop in IC13 and IC49 from the rack board. Install the SCSI
5380, and cabling. Install known good HD.

I can boot normal SE1.1 OS disk.
Floppy drive is NOT bad- it is brand new, as I put it in recently (I
know how to change the ID0 on new drives to work in emax)

I try to make an SE1.1 HD disk with EMX in DOS 6.22.
Tried formatting on Emax first, as well as formatting with EMX.

Symptom:
See "Loading Software" and hear floppy disk loading.. normal sounds -
3 times it makes the not strange loading a floppy does. Then it just
stops.

Now to the question: Is the EMX program just not properly making the
OS disk?

While I am using MS-DOS 6.22, does the PC speed have anything to do
with a successful OS creation? The PC is a 2.8Ghz P4.

I dunno if it will make a difference, but I will try on a P1/233Mhz
tomorrow at work.

Thanks,
Ted

I have a very similar problem. I picked up an emax hd keyboard.
Everything turns on but I can't get it to boot.

This is what I've tried:

Making two os disks (emax hd and emax hd se, just in case) under dos
6.22 using emx.

Result: disk not formatted/loading software (stuck)

I also used emxp and a different drive ( fd-23hf with id set to 0 )
both for formatting from a computer and then for booting from the
emax... nothing.

Result: loading software (stuck)

I tried pushing the chips and pulling on them a little just to make
sure there were no old/bad connections. I also reconnected all the
cables... nothing

Result: loading software STUCK!!!!

Does anybody have any suggestions of what to do? BTW, I tried both
ds/dd and hd floppies.

I overcame my problems.

Key info here:
if you are going to use external zip drive, you want the Emax PLUS OS
1.0 software. This allows external scsi to work.
Go to an OLD PC (like a 200MHZ or something) to make the floppy.

That is what worked for me.

If the floppy starts and does the 3 clicks, the floppy controller is
fine. The floppy controller chip is a WD1772, it is available on the
web, but I really don't think that is your problem.

Failing that, you will have to have someone send you a floppy for the
$5.....

I've actually tried making the disks on other older computers... I guess
they weren't old enough.

The only thing left to do is order an emax hd-made OS from somebody and see
if that works.

Just out of curiosity: how many people have managed to make OS disks on
modern/fast computers under DOS 6.22 or EMXP?

update: just formatted 6 floppies using emx on a 233mhz computer under dos
6.22... still getting the three ticks from the floppy and then stuck on the
"software loading" screen....

Re: Emax SE HD OS problem

There is definitely a problem with formatting disks for EMAX samplers
on a PC (both EMX and EMXP). I've got 3 EMAX-II samplers and 1 EMAX-
SE sampler. All EMAX-II samplers can read/write EMX formatted disks,
but the EMAX-SE fails most of the time (=3 ticks).
I overcame the problem by formatting a disk on an EMAX-II and writing
the EMAXSE OS to that disk using EMXP. This works fine. But of course
you need an EMAX-II to do that :-)
What I didn't try yet is formatting a disk from the already booted
EMAX-SE and try to reboot from that disk. I'll check this.

When I have time I'll try to further investigate what causes the
incompatibility with EMAX-I sampler floppy drives. I tried some
things before (when writing the first version of EMXP) but I didn't
own an EMAX-SE that time so it was not easy to do some tests.

I think you also mentioned somewhere else that the LED of the
floppydrive is always on. I don't think that's a problem: the LED on
mine is also always on (except when power is off :-)

I also hoped to be able to solve this kind of problems for EMAX
samplers having an external SCSI interface. I was going to put a
format function for zip disks in EMXP, so that floppies would not be
required anymore. But I didn't manage to build that feature - still
trying though...

Good luck

Well, atleast now I feel more like it may just be an OS/floppy
problem and not a floppy drive or other more-serious thing.

Thanks everybody for the input! I'll update this when/if I get this
thing fixed.

For What It's worth I always used EMX with disks formatted in the Emax I itself. I got the plus OS to work once and since then I haven't been able to write an OS from EMX.
