emu emax I: Startup disc

2006-08-27 by K Whidden

Hello,
I recently picked up an Emax I rack sampler from a yard sale. I'm extremely
interested in getting this beast running, but, i have no idea about how to
make a startup disc with my computer. Can someone give me some advice?
thanks,
Kbwhidden

Hi, see message 3359 and before. This question is quite a popular one...

In short:
- Try to find a DSDD floppy disk (720K in DOS)
- Make sure your PC has an internal floppy drive (not USB)

Option 1:
- Use EMX (MS DOS), EMXP (WinXP) or OmniFlop (WinXp) to format the disk
for EMAX
- Download the OS from the files section or from www.emulatorarchive.com
- Write the OS to the floppy disk using EMX or EMXP.

Option 2:
- Download one of the CopyQM packages from the files section of this
group
- Use this CopyQM (MS DOS) package to format & write the OS to the
floppy disk

Hints:
- Do not run EMX or CopyQM from a Windows DOS box, it will make a
corrupt disk ! You have to boot the PC in DOS (startup disk...)
- A lot of EMAX-I sampler floppy drives have a slightly different
calibration compared to PC drives. EMX-formatted disks or disks
formatted by EMXP using the *standard EMXP floppy driver* might not be
recognized by EMAX-I samplers. Use CopyQM, EMXP with OmniFlop driver or
OmniFlop software itself to format the disk if you want to avoid these
problems.

Hey,
I'm having a hard time booting into Dos, i had to create a dos boot cd, but
for some reason the os still isn't being detected with my DD discs. This is
a little frustrating!!!

So if I understand well you managed to boot your PC in DOS, you
formatted a DD disk with EMX, put an OS on it and your EMAX sampler
still doesn't recognize the disk ?

If that's true, you are in the situation described under "hints" in
my previous message. This means EMX won't be a solution for you.

You should try
- either CopyQM (use one of the ZIP packages in the files section).
In my case this worked fine...
- or install the OmniFlop software from
http://www.shlock.co.uk/Utils/OmniFlop/OmniFlop.htm. Install the
driver, start OmniFlop and license the driver online by
choosing "format" and "Emu EMAX". Then format the disk or use EMXP
v1.92 to format the disk and to install the OS on it.

If none of this helps, you could have a drive problem in your EMAX,
or serious calibration differences. To check this someone will have
to send you a disk by postal mail.

Re: [emax] Re: emu emax I: Startup disc

Hello,

Actually, my problem is that I have a Mac G4 for a computer with no floppy disc or scsi. I have a Emax SE Plus that I would like to use, but it came with no discs at all. when I power it up, it says loading system...and does not change from that message, no matter what buttons I select. I would imagine that I need a OS disc and some sound files. I am just looking for someone who would be willing to send me a few discs to see if this thing even is functional. Please let me know if you can help.

 Thanks,

 John
