Floppy Drives for Emax I SE

Floppy Drives for Emax I SE

2007-10-15 by tnb09061974

Hello,

I have a Emax I SE with a faulty disk drive. The lamp of the floppy
drive shines but the drive doesn't work any more. In the display I can
read the message:"Please insert disk!" even if I insert a disk.
Can tell me somebody of yours, which floppy drives are really
compatible to Emax I SE?
Please don't refer me to the Route66 Studios. I think that the prices
there are too overexpensive.

Thanks for your advice!

Greetz Dan

If you are technically inclined, you should be able to make most
standard floppies work. I was able to. The drive just needs to be
able to be made a "Drive 0" which most new floppies are "Drive 1". I
had to move a surface mount resistor to change it. But each drive
layout of the board is different, so I can't just say "move this
resistor/ jumper from here to here other than what I have already
told you.

I figured it out by:
1) Looking up the floppy spec online
2) Looking at the original drive circuitry in relation to the spec.
3) Comparing the old drive to the new by tracing the circuit that was
indicated from 1 and 2.

Required Digital Multimeter to verify 100% what I was doing, as it
would be bad to fry the floppy controller for emax- that can be hard
to find.

Regards,
Ted

Okay what I have done now?

I have removed a floppy drive from an old Atari STFM and replaced the
original floppy drive (Mitsubishi MF353B-12UJ) from the Emax SE with
that. And it works very well!!!

For all users with similar problems: The "new" floppy drive is an
Epson SMD-380 (but I´m sure that the Epson SMD-300 will also worked!)
... :-)

So far ... Dan

Hi there,

just got my first emax with SE, and the sampling is just awesome...
anyway...
i read somewhere on the web that you can get lucky with a lot of old
pc disc drives that were designed to read dd/sd floppies. when i have
a problem with my elecronics i go to a guy who works at a university
fixing computers and electronix. there might be somebody around where
you live with a messy department that doesnt clear anything out for
years...i know it sounds insane but worth a try?

best,
Peter

I think you will find that any PC floppy disk drive with a jumper to set it to master will work. I simply connected up one that I found in a junk pile when my drive gave up the ghost. Make sure you connect up the cables properly eg. pin 1 on connector to pin 1 on cable, the power cable should only connect up one way.

that's really great to know!!!

I have received my emax in a great condition but it never has been
put through it's paces and the operating mechanism always going back
to the drive can be a bit scary.
also it has been funny with some recycled old dd/sd disks telling
me 'bad disk' etc.

I could buy a lot of new TDK dd discs from ebay but the new ones are
usually thin and flimsy and i used to have issues with TDK on my
MPC60.

what are your experiences regarding discs reliability? which make do
you find most reliable? how much do you (ab)use your emax?

best,
Pete

I have been using Memorex and Nashua HD 1.44 disks with no problems as well as many different brand (mostly Perfect or Memorex) old style DSDD disks and have had very little problems.
