EMAX II Power Supply?

EMAX II Power Supply?

2001-11-15 by Ray

Hi

I'm having a bit of a problem with my EMAX II rack. When I go to turn
it on sometimes it powers up just fine and other times it just makes a
clicking sound with all LEDs blinking as well as the LCD blinking.
It's very intermittent. When it eventually powers up it stays on no
problem. I can even turn it back off and it will turn on again. It
almost seems like it acts up after it sits for a long period being off.
However, sometimes it works just fine for weeks. I'm very confused.
Has anyone ever encountered something like this? The clicking is coming
from the power supply board.

Thanks
Ray

Switch off. Leave it overnight - The PSU capacitors can be nasty!
Check that all the plugs onto the PSU and main board are secure by
unplugging and refitting them.
If that doesn't cure it, there may be a couple of dry joints on the board -
remove it and resolder any dodgy-looking joints.
As usual, be extremely careful doing this - there can be up to 350vdc on the
input stage.

If all else fails, it's time to invent a new PSU...

HTH
 Gordon.

like, for instance the spark sound a gas oven makes when you start it?

switchmode power supply problem.... perhaps you have a dry joint in there,
as gordon suggested, or maybe insulation around a coil has started to break
down.

anyway - fix it soon. all this unregulated voltage driving your emax can't
be good for it!!!!

Hi

Thanks for the suggestions! However, I am brain-dead when it comes to
electronics. I know what a dry joint is but not pertaining to electronics!
Also, insulation around a coil? How do I check for these things and/or fix
them? I have replaced a floppy drive and also installed the memory upgrade
with no problems but that is the extent of my experience. Are these things
that I might be able to do myself?

Thanks again
Ray
