2008-09-13 by Michael Wisbech

Hi
I looking for a disk drive for my emax, i understand that old Mac drives
wil do.
But in the archives of this group there is a post about modyfying an pc
drive to an emax drive 'id 0'
but it semed to me a bit unclear how to actually doing it, is the person
still here ? have anybody else tried it ?
any pictures of the process ?

Re: [emax] Disk drive

it varies by drive, and is not available on newer drives, unless you
know what you are doing and what to look for. I modified a Sony
MPF-920, but I believe they have changed the board as that was several
years ago, and I don't think the jumper space is there now. Had to
solder a surface mount jumper or resistor.... from one location to a
new location..... notes may be on the group in the archive for that
drive....

Ted

Not sure if the post from me, but I've definitely done it before and it works. You just have to find a creative way to fill the gap.

If you look at the pcb on the floppy drive (assuming it has no jumpers for drive select), then somewhere you will see a silk screen for DS and some kind of surface mount resistor bridging two points. I.E. mine looked something like
(0)
o
|
o---o (1)
(I)

Three points. One labeled 0, another labeled 1 and a point in the middle, I. So when the drive is set DS1, the resistor bridges 1 and I. If you carefully unsolder it and solder it between 0 and I, then it is DS0.
The thing is that it is very probably a surface mount resistor and I'm not set up to do any SM so it is kind of hard to keep this very tiny resistor in place while you are trying to solder it back on and you can very easily lose it if you are careless after removing it.

Give it a try. Floppy drives are so inexpensive that if you mess it up, then you can just try again on another.

Good Luck,
Chase Smith

wauw quick answers here.
it's my second drive excahnge i am about to do.
i will try your suggestions.
But what do you mean here :
"and I'm not set up to do any SM "

I really can figure out what SM is, in relation to a disk drive :))

Would it be a problem that modern diskdrives are made for 1.44 kb 'DD*
where the emax uses 0.750 kb Drives. ?
its an emax 1 i have.

I still use DS/DD disks and I have no problems. I think you might be able to try and use HD disks, but I wouldn't rely on it.

I meant the DiskDrive .
Have tried with HD disks they are very unreliable.

:(

But have a bunch of DD disks on storage that someone throw out.
Mostly i just wnat my emax up and running again to record my old sounds to
wav format..
as t think the emax keyboard is too big to have in my appartment.

SCSI Upgrade /CF Flash Notes / Updates....

2008-09-19 by Ted Summers

So I have a Baldwin IKE (Emax keyboard clone). In the past, I bought
an Emax Rack that was dead off ebay, and I stole the PALs and EPROM
out of it to make my Baldwin IKE SCSI. I was going to try and revive
the rack. But the Echip is dead. So it is toast.

Prior to finally determining the rack was dead, and working with Rob
at Emulator Archive, to try and make a SCSI upgrade available again, I
have found the following out that MAY be helpful to some.

If you have IP379a at IC 49 and IP345c at IC 26 with a rev C board,
then it appears that all you need is the 5380 SCSI controller, and an
EPROM with SCSI capability.

If anyone wishes to verify they have those ICs I can burn the SCSI
capable EPROM for $10/each plus shipping.

For people who may need the SCSI IC- the price will vary depending on
how many I would need to buy.... but I believe I can get them. Or you
could try and source them yourself.

I still haven't been able to make PALs yet for a complete kit, but I
am still working on it.

Soon I may have for sale-
A set of SCSI IC's (a complete set - the 2 PALs, EPROM, and a 5380).
An IDE compact flash with SCSI to IDE converter

ALSO- I have gotten 5 floppy converters that allow you to put a slim /
laptop floppy in the emax on top of the CF or zip drive.
They would be pre-modified and tested. $10/each includes shipping to
anywhere in US.
You just have to make brackets- however I am considering making some
brackets if there was interest and selling the converter and mount
brackets as a kit for a bit more.

Members- please let me know if any of you are interested in the
results of these projects.

Regards,
Ted

wow - that looks like a very cool offer.

I'll check the inside of my EMAX SE tonight, and let you know if I have
a emax suitable for trying the new EEPROM and SCSI chip experiment.

Re: [emax] Known brand of CF reader that will work with Emax also External CD Rom

2008-09-19 by Ted Summers

Dunno about CD ROM.

The IDE CF that works with SCSI to IDE converter is generic. The SCSI
to IDE converter is a specific one that is tested. Please search the
group messages archive for the model.

As to SCSI CF- I dunno all those model either, but I have a MicroTech
DPAI-SCSI that appears to work, though I have not done my full testing
with it, as I am working on the SCSI upgrade chips..... that is my
current major project.

Ted

It should be a valid solution for disk drive problem regardless of what synth/sampler you have. You can use a new disk drive and just change the chords of the flat-cable (datacable) without any modification done to the disk drive itself. Read the whole thread on that link above.

I was thinking about the diskdrive, why don't you just replace it with a
new 'IDE' one?
If you need to change the ID of the diskdrive (from ID1 to ID0) you can
twist the conductors of the flatribbon-cable like picture below.
Twist the conductors 10, 11, and 12, the red conductor is always #1. Doing
this you don't need to solder the diskdrive or anything.
