Internal Scsi Zipdrive possible with Emax ?

Internal Scsi Zipdrive possible with Emax ?

2008-09-25 by marc

Hi,

i have an internal SCSI zip drive that i would like to install on my Emax 1 HD SE. I was just
messing around with it tonight and i noticed that the Emax does not seem to boot from
internal HD if the floppy is disconnected. IS there a workaround for this ?
Otherwise i see no chance in installing the internal ZIP :(

Regards

Marc

I think if you search the archives, you'll find information on which
pins you need to short out on the Floppy drive header on the digital
board of the Emax. Once you short these pins, the Emax will boot
without the need for a floppy drive.

I found it in my own mail archive (thanks, gmail!) -- you need to
jumper pins 25 and 26 together.

Since it's a 34-pin connector, I believe you will have a jumper on the
5th set of pins from the end (25/16).

BIG NEWS ------ SCSI Upgrade chip sets available.

2008-09-27 by Ted Summers

It is now possible to re-create the SCSI chip sets required to put
SCSI into Emax I keyboard and rack units.

The SAME RULES APPLY that did before as per the SCSI upgrade docs at
Emulator Archive-
a rev 3 board will take the chips- no mods if I recall.....
a rev 2 board needs modified

A rev1 cannot be upgraded.

I have PALs in stock.

I can make the EPROMs and I can source the SCSI controllers.

I need to find out how many people want this kit, so I can order
EPROMs and SCSI controllers that will be needed.

The number of EPROMs and controllers will somewhat dictate the price,
as sourcing the SCSI controllers will be the unknown variable at this
point.

The cost of the kit is expected to be $50 USD + shipping - depending
on what the controllers cost.

Here is your chance to get SCSI!

THIS SET DOES NOT INCLUDE A HARD DISK- but can be used with SCSI Zip,
SCSI Compact Flash / SD, SCSI hard drive, etc. IDE CF works via an
ACARD SCSI adapter.....

For testing purposes I purchased two controllers and EPROMS, so I
currently have two sets available now for $50 USD +shipping.

First come first serve.

Once the controllers and EPROMS are ordered, I should have enough kit
to make about 45 sets with current PAL inventory.

Each set of chips will be tested in my Emax to verify operation prior
to shipping.

Regards,
Ted

PS- Thanks go out to:
Rob at Emulator Archive for getting me the binaries
The MAME (Arcade Emulation) "ROM dumps" team members who helped me
determine what was not quite right with those PAL binaries, enabling
us all to add SCSI once again.

Ted,

This is fantastic news! I had no idea this was even possible or that
anyone had binaries for the PALs.

Had I not gone through the "proper channels" (E-Mu shipped me chips)
in 1991 I'd be all over this!

Glad to see others will finally be able to SCSI-ify their Emaxes.

Dave

Hi Marc,

Yes, remove the Floppy Drive ribbon cable, noting where pin 1 (red
stripe wire) is. Like so (sorry for the bad ascii art):

1 33
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
2 34

Place jumper between pins 25/26 on motherboard where you just removed cable.

That's great work, Ted.

It's good to see someone still supporting (IMHO) completely viable technology, unlike
many manufacturers who want you to upgrade to the 'latest and greatest'...

SCSI upgrade works!

2008-10-02 by Chase Smith

In case you are wondering if the SCSI upgrade offered by Ted Summers (djtbs1@...) works, then I am here to tell you that it does.

I purchased the two initial kits from him and upgraded my Rev. 2 digital board Emax with it via the pdf from the emulator archive. Got it up and running a few moments ago and now the only thing left is to figure out how to slightly widen the hole on the front (it is a rack model) so that I can eject a zip disk (I am going to use an internal zip and do away with the floppy).

Has anyone done this before to accommodate the extra width of the zip? I would like to do this with as minimal cosmetic damage as possible, but I guess there isn't much else I can do except file the sides down.

Thanks,
Chase

I also had to file a notch in each of the sides of the floppy opening
to accommodate the width of the ZIP disks themselves.

It doesn't look too bad.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
