Boot-up errors

Boot-up errors

2009-01-15 by crazychris8547

Hello everybody

I just received an Emax II Rack, I bought through Ebay in USA.
Surprisingly it has a Harddisc installed that the seller didn't
mention. The Emax is in good condition.
But when I power on the sampler, some boot-up diagnostic LED's are lit.

Transpose: Analog board (I disconnected it, so it's OK)

Drive Select: LSI#2 (????)

Master: LSI#1 (????)

Preset Definition: Floppy Track 00 (I guess, the Floppy-Drive is not
working anymore thought it's Drive-LED is lit. I haven't had the time
yet to take the Floppy-Drive from my Emax 1 to test)

Dynamic Allocation: Complete Software Boot (I guess that's lit,
because of the problems above)

Now I need some support about the LSI-Errors. What do they mean, what
can I do?

Thank you very much for any help and sorry about my weak english ;-)

Chris

NB: Is there any group-member from Switzerland?

I don't have schematics, but reading the diagnostics manual....
from emax 1 diagnostics, the tests are sequential. If emax 2 is the
same.....
The transpose being on, means it cannot properly see the analog board or the
query to that board froze up.

LSI- stands for Large Scale Integration, used in describing the IC's. (read
large # of transistors make up the IC).

So drive select and Master on probably indicate the LSI chips are either
having a bad connection issue or are actually bad.
And the Preset so floppy doesn't work....

What I am thinking is that the IC's have all come loose.

Please take static-safe precautions.
Remove the board(s) from the Emax and set them on a flat, static safe
surface.
Completely remove and reinsert each socketed IC one at a time.
Replace the board in the Emax2
Disconnect and reconnect any connectors to the boards that were previously
not disconnected when removing the board.
Then try powering up again.

Regards,
Ted

To add to Ted's great advice. I would recommend examining the circuit
paths for a burnt/dark coloration. I had this on my keyboard circuit
board and was able to scrap off the damaged insulator and clean the
copper pathways and regain functionality. Also exmaine the solder joints
where the IC sockets are attached to the board for damage. Finally,
which you should do first while you are reseating the IC. Look for any
bent or broken/missing pins on the any of your connectors.

Plus: I would clean the IC's and connector's pins with Isopropyl
alcohol while reseating them. I used an electric toothbrush to do this
(on my EII). Be careful though not to bend/break a pin.

Hello Guys

Thank you very much for your advice. I gladly try them out.

I will keep you informed ;-)

Cheers

Chris
