Greetings all,
I've owned an EMAX SE 1 (non HD) for a few years, just found this
resource. Any LCD's available for this ? The back light is inop. I
purchased a new one from Hantronix HDM16216H-2 and the back light
works, but the read out doesn't, so I put the old one back in.
Question 2, I have an opportunity to purchase (won an Ebay bid,
actually) an EMAX 2 rack, model 2213, 2MB, no HD. The owner is being
very reasonable in that they want an OS disk to ensure it powers up,
etc.pror to my purchase. I have e-mailed Rob at the Emulator archive
web site about a week ago with no response as of yet. I'm sure he's
busy and hate to bug him. He and his web site are tremendous! Might
any one here in this group be kind enough to mail me an OS disk? I'd
be glad to reimburse in some way, $'s, advice, EMAX 1 banks so I can
see if the II rack is working or not. Thanks for listening, I'm sure
I'll get some valuable info from a very knowledgable group of friendly
folks! Mark

AFAIK, it's just a plain vanilla Hitachi-type LCD. These have an HD44780
controller on them, and (usually) a 16-pin DIL connector for the host
interface. They're pretty common, really. More info here -
http://www.doc.ic.ac.uk/~ih/doc/lcd/
Looking around, it suggests that the LCD you have should be OK. Check the
contrast - you may need to leave it unconnected and make up your own circuit
for that. Also, make sure the connectors are all the right way round!

You can download EMX (Emax disk tool thingy) and the latest OS image from a
number of places on the 'net - I got mine from www.emulatorarchive.com in
their downloads section. It's pretty easy to use. You need a PC rather
than a Mac though. Mac GCR double density disks can't talk to the MFM DD
disks used in PC's and Emax's, so there's not any great chance of a Mac disk
utility any time soon.

Thanks! I'll figure out the contrast thing and give it another go on
my EMAX I. Sorry, I wasn't clear perhaps, but I need an EMAX II OS
disk to boot up a machine. As far as I can discover, that's not
available via download and writing to a disk w/EMX. So can someone help?
Thanks again,
Mark

Recently I stumbeled onto a program for DOS with which I made a sucessful bootable copy of my Emax II 2.14 os disk. I'm sending you a copy of the shareware and the disk image of my Emax II 2.14 os to see if it will work on the your end. There is instructions included with the software. You will have to work in a DOS window. Unzip the file to a directory of your choice. I used the root directory. The command line syntax for copying the image file to floppy will be as follows:
COPYQM A: PLAYBACK=C:zd777 BIOS

Watch the spacing
zd777 is my image of the zd777 EMAX disk with the Emax II 2.14 OS on it
BIOS is a command to the program.

To make the disk image I used the following command line from the DOS prompt:

COPYQM A: RECORD=C:zd777 BIOS
Again watch your spacing .
Both processes take quite a while to do but the results were well worth it to me.

You will find a copy of the software in the files section of this group. You'll have to unzip the file then you will have to unzip Copyqm.zip.

Lets see what happens!
Best of luck,
Skip

Please let us know if you are able to make a bootable disk from the file. Since I get lots
of email about not being able to use EMX if this program works I could then make an
image of all the different OS disks I have, Emax, SE, HD, Plus, Emax II etc. And make
them available for download.

FAQ update

Speaking of uploading, I updated the Emax II FAQ today to contain information on
replacement floppy drives and a link to Route 66 Studios to order one.

John,

I think the trick with emx might be to use real DOS
with a real FAT16 file system.

I remember it used to work for me with win95, years
ago, but last time I tried it with win98, I had a hell
of a time with corrupt/incomplete banks, etc etc etc.

I don't really have the time to test right now, (or a
proper DOS system with a FAT16 drive) but if someone
would like to a/b with win98+ vs. DOS6.22 and see how
it works, I think that there is a big chance this is
the main thing.....

LCD contrast

2002-03-01 by Rob EmuArc

Hi,
Some information for Emax/Emax II users replacing the LCD. The viewing
angle/contrast (it's the same thing in these LCD's) may well need adjusting
after you put in a new LCD. On the Emax II the setting is controlled via
software and stored permanently in an EEPROM, check out MASTER 9 SPECIAL 3
RECALIBRATE 9 = LCD CONTRAST. In the later Emax I models there is a small
preset pot on the digital board behind the cable to the control panel, you
have to adjust the preset pot with your finger whilst viewing the LCD -
tricky and watch out for the power supply voltages in an opened casing. In
early Emax I models the viewing angle is set by two precision resistors in
the same place, if you have problems with the viewing angle you'll need to
replace these with a preset pot.

Hope this helps
Rob

Thanks! I'll figure out the contrast thing and give it another go on my
EMAX I.

This is true, EMX is still fully functional if you happen to have a copy of DOS 6.22 or
earlier laying around. However most people don't and I get a lot of email asking me for
support with EMX, to which the typical answer is you must be running DOS 6.22 or
earlier, and the response, well where can I get a copy of that...

If we can figure out a way to make OS disks on modern computers that would be a great
gift. I'm really surprised that no one on this list programs at a level that would allow them
to take the source code of EMX and make it work on Win98 and newer machines. Of
course the only thing I can program is my Commodore 64 and that's if I have a book
next to me with the code already typed out .. LOL

I just used Copy QM to copy an EMAX 1 OS and bank floppy. Works
perfectly based on Skip's instructions. John it looks like this is a
viable way to spread the OS's and banks. Thanks a million! I also
copied the EMAX II OS 2.14 w/ZD777 bank to a 720K DSDD floppy and will
be mailing it to my Ebay friend to ensure the rack boots up and works.
Thanks all! Next to the LCD contrast issue. I'm so glad I discovered
this group. Now, I better make some more music and quit goofing around
with these hardware problems (but it's fun to fix things).

Re: Free OS Diskettes - was Unable to Post

Thanks Rob. I did e-mail the address and got no response about a week
or two ago. Maybe my e-mails screwed up, I had problems posting here.
I forwarded you some banks I thought you might like/need for the EMAX
I. Let me know if you didn't get them. Anyhow, the copyqm process
seems to work, but I've also been able to use EMX when I boot from a
floppy with DOS 6.22 for the EMAX I stuff (OS's and banks). Your web
site is a really great resource for all things EMu!
Thanks,
Mark

OK, give me a copy of the source then... I'll take a look at it. I think
the disks are pretty ordinary. What I'll do is try copying them off with
Linux 'dd' and see if there's any joy there.
Does anybody know if EMX works under Freedos? Since Freedos supports
networking etc. it would be no great shakes to build up a (very) low-end PC
specifically for running EMX, if you had to do it a lot. Bear in mind,
though, that a Freedos boot floppy, EMX, and an Emax II floppy image will
fit onto a single 1.44M disk...

Cheers,
  Gordon.

EMX Source

2002-03-04 by John Silveria

Well, I'm trying to add the EMX source file to the group's file section on Yahoo! Groups,
but the site seems to be down right now. Gordon if you want me to email you directly I
can, just let me know. It's a whopping 10k Zip file :) If not just keep an eye out on the
group's file section and I'll add it soon.

Oh, well... 10k? I'll try it - don't choke my mail server though :-)

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
